Professor of Law, Mamdouh Abu Al Husna, has just been assassinated along with his father and two of his sons in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their home in Jabalia. There is consensus within European legal communities that Israel is committing genocide. A number of lawyers in the UK and Netherlands are making an effort to hold their governments accountable for their complicity in this genocide, but legal professionals in other countries remain very quiet. At this point, we must all ask ourselves what the legal industry is for: is it to uphold justice or is it to protect systems that deny justice? In the end, it is legal professionals who determine the nature of our legal industries. Unfortunately, the majority of these professionals are too concerned with protecting themselves, protecting their business interests, and thus upholding deeply discriminatory systems. So it was during the heights of Western Imperialism, so it was in 1930s Germany, so it was when Britain invaded Iraq under false pretences, and so it is today. https://lnkd.in/dTexX9mR The International Criminal Court: A Collective International Commitment to Global Peace and Security The objectives and principles that established the International Criminal Court are in perfect alignment with those of the United Nations, as both seek to enhance international peace and security and protect humanity from the gravest crimes threatening its existence. While the Security Council may be influenced by political interests, the International Criminal Court, as an independent and permanent international institution, is guided by the principle of human justice, driven solely by the aim to deter the most serious crimes, such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. What underscores the role of the Court is that it has received requests from non-state parties to the Rome Statute, such as Georgia, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ukraine (before their recent membership), seeking justice and standing against threats to international peace and security. This demonstrates that the Court's mission goes beyond its membership, as it seeks to protect higher human values and embody justice that transcends political and membership boundaries.
