Samir Samir Singh I departed Unilever almost 10 years ago under perhaps similar circumstances. I agree Unilever is an amazing organization and will always hold a special place in my heart. The “Circle of Life” though realistically often ensures the “aged and expensive” (50+) are often replaced by those who are younger are less expensive. Unsure this is a actually great strategy for organizations, but it is current reality, and I understand it. BTW, this is not a Unilever only reality- all CPG and all other organizations (for profit and NFP) follow the same playbook IMO. All organizations will vehemently deny an ageism bias exists - but it clearly does. I suspect virtually all women and male executives who are 50+ would absolutely agree that ageism exists across the board for economic or other reasons? This may change though in this decade - the demographics are clear - 10k folks are hitting age 65 EVERYDAY in the U.S. and institutional knowledge is lost. Experienced talent and institutional knowledge is exiting and lost at a rate never seen before in history. Celebrating Two Months at Unilever: 🌟 Two months ago, my professional journey took an exciting turn as I embarked on an industrial placement at Unilever, joining the EU bottles procurement team for B&W and PC business groups. 🌐 Within these two months, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with colleagues on a global scale. Short Tata Stories (SHO-T-S) 114. The power of recognition In the 1990s, I was a young marketing manager in Tata Tea Ltd. (now called Tata Consumer Products Ltd.). We were a relatively small company in those days, engaged in a fierce battle with one of the world's largest consumer companies, Unilever, for share of the Indian branded tea market. In those days, Hindustan Unilever was the dominant market leader, and we were a distant but hungry challenger. In three consecutive years, our team exceeded all our sales targets - our achievement was around 130% of targets. Using a slew of marketing innovations, our brands - Chakra Gold Tea and Gemini Tea - grew in strong double digits each of these years and gained significant market shares in key geographies, out beating the Unilever brands by far. The Company rewarded our performances through very good performance ratings and annual incentives. However, what really charged me up was a letter of recognition that I received from R.K. Krishna Kumar, Managing Director of the Company (please see picture below). The fact that the head of the Company took the time and effort to write such a letter to me was very touching and motivating - and I was only a middle manager in those days, not a senior officer. Each year, a few of my colleagues who performed superbly would receive such a thoughtfully crafted personal letter - but only if we had achieved something exceptional in that year. It meant the world to us, and it would motivate us to aim for far greater heights in the years that followed. Today, nearly thirty years later, I do not remember what annual incentive amount I received in those years, or even my exact performance score. However, I remember and fondly treasure this wonderful letter of recognition from the Managing Director of the Company. That is the power of recognition.
