Just last month, I had the honor of speaking at the 2nd Annual Health Equity Congress in Atlanta. I’ve had some time to reflect on what I’ve learned from other fellow professionals on how we can all make a difference in the clinical trial space. Here were some of my takeaways: 1. Let’s Emphasize Our Patient’s Needs - It's important to really understand what our patients are going through, not just their health conditions, but the daily challenges they face because they live with these diseases every day. By collecting and using data from their real-life experiences, we can learn more about what different groups of patients need. This helps us design better clinical trials that focus on these needs and make sure all kinds of patients are fairly represented. 2. Education is Key - Everyone involved has a role in educating patients—this includes doctors, local communities, groups that advocate for patients, and companies that sponsor health research. By working together, we can give clear and accurate information about important clinical trials. This helps fight against wrong information about health, especially for those dealing with autoimmune diseases and rare conditions. It's like being part of a team; everyone needs to be active and involved, not just watching from the sidelines. 3. Patient Voices Make Better Trials - When we let patients help design clinical trials, the trials become more useful and easier for them to participate in. This cooperation makes the trials more directly relevant to their needs and builds trust. More trust means more people are likely to join and stay in these trials. By listening to what patients say they need and prefer, we make sure the trials are truly helping them in the best way possible. It's more than just informing our patients; it's about ALL of us actively listening to them and incorporating their experiences into our practices. While we may be the experts, patients live with their conditions daily, making their insights invaluable. By integrating these strategies, we aim to reach more underserved communities and ensure that trust, transparency, and improved success rates are achieved through clinical trials. #PatientRecruitment #HealthEquity #ClinicalTrials #HealthLiteracy #Heathcare #BioTech #ViuHealth

On World Health Day 2024, I’m reinforcing Accession’s mission to ensure Millions More Patients Gain Access to Medicines. This is embedded in our work as market access consultants and in our proprietary healthtech platform pathwaypro®, but we have more to do… Since Accession was founded in 2011, we have worked resolutely to achieve patient access to medicines. In our founding year, we also had our sights on ensuring that we made a positive impact on our clients, the economy and wider society. In 2024 I see our founding values delivering results in the form of our work in tackling health inequalities and enabling health equity. At the core of this work is medicines access and healthcare system design. To further this, with my background in Human Biology and working in areas of high deprivation throughout my career, I also have a personal interest in the wider determinants of health. I’m seeking to do more in this area personally over the coming years and my wish is to build this into the work we do at Accession. World Health Day 2024, reminds us that good health extends beyond healthcare. I value the impact I can contribute now, ensuring that patients can gain access to new and innovate medicines, and I personally aspire to do more to tackle the wider determinants of health, and contribute more to this space in years to come. While all my colleagues in our Unit might work on different workstreams, we never lose sight of the big picture and how our work as a small unit within the WHO Science Division will impact global public health. This #WorldHealthDay I celebrate some the wonderful colleagues I have the honour to work with in the Unit: Mercedes Perez Gonzalez manages the World Health Organization’s Coordinated Scientific Advice Programme and supports the development of WHO's product profiles (#TPPs). This work ensures that product developers and funders are adequately prioritizing the development of high-quality medical products that meet the world’s most critical public health needs. Amina Haouala and Sarah Charnaud support teams across the organization in setting prioritized research agendas, and unpack the R&D pipeline to better understand ongoing research and product development. Ghassan Karam, MSc manages the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (#ICTRP) - the largest network of clinical trials registries and the most complete database of clinical trials. Soatiana RAJA supports countries and regions to operationalize policies on the responsible use of life sciences will ensure that biorisks are mitigated and public safety is protected during the conduct of cutting-edge research that is essential for public health advancement. ★Emmanuelle Tuerlings convenes countless world-renowed experts to develop new policies and guidance for the responsible use of life sciences, in keeping up with advances in science and technology. Danny Sheath supports the Secretariat for the WHO Science Council, a unique advisory group to the WHO. Elena Ambrosino coordinates our vast programme on genomics technologies, from global convening to regional and country implementation. Ciara Staunton is bringing together experts world-wide to help develop WHO guiding principles on human genome data sharing, access and use. Clarinda Cerejo helps us all reflect on how to engage with appropriate stakeholders. Lambed Tatah (MD MSc MPH PhD) helps us make sense of R&D data. @Veronique Bruniquel makes sure our operations run smoothly. The above people are just a snapshot of our Unit today - actually significantly smaller than usual, so huge appreciation to all who go the extra mile daily to improve health for all. #colleagues #worldhealthday
