Financing Africa Requires Innovation My recommendation - spend the time and effort on examining the frontiers of knowledge and practice. Let me explain: 1. There should be a focus on optimizing the impact of remittances by giving these flows more positive policy treatment. The quantum of remittances has grown but the mindset of economic policy specialiats has not caught up. 2 An African-owned financing agenda must include innovation in financing (e.g domestic currency funds, hedging and blended finance architecture). There is a need for more venues where informed and thoughtful actors such as Lucy Quist Hannah Ryder (芮 婉 洁) Gavin Andersson, PhD Misheck Mutize (PhD) get to contribute to setting directions. These thinkers and do-ers challenge at an epistemic level. 5. The implementation of change requires activators like Amma A. Gyampo Diana Gichaga and Alistair Scott. Groups like Shared Interest are vital. This is the work we do across all these components and would welcome opportunities to discuss. #TripleBFramework

At the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), African leaders called for stronger digital infrastructure and financial services efforts to close the digital gap across the continent. Their focus on #digitalinclusion ties in with themes to be discussed at the upcoming ESG Africa Conference. The #UNGA79 and the upcoming ESG Africa Conference highlight Africa's need for sustainability and digital growth. The ESG Africa Conference on October 1-2, 2024, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Gauteng, South Africa, will bring together key players from various sectors to discuss how businesses can adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Dilip Pal, Chief Finance Officer at Safaricom, highlighted the importance of these discussions at UNGA: “Sustainability is key to Africa’s digital transformation. SMEs are central to driving the economy forward and should lead the charge. With better financial options and collaborations to improve skills, we can build stronger, more resilient supply chains.” The discussions at UNGA stressed that digital tools are essential for sustainable development in Africa. Leaders urged stronger partnerships between governments and businesses to expand digital access, boost financial inclusion through mobile platforms, and ensure economic growth benefits everyone. As the ESG Africa Conference approaches, African leaders remain focused on using digital technology to support sustainable and inclusive growth. Introducing Mahlon Walo, Chairman of CAMAK & CEO of Afrinet Carbon Ltd Mahlon views the #EastAfricaCarbonMarketsForum as a pivotal platform for knowledge sharing, policy advocacy, standardization, financial accessibility, and stakeholder partnerships. In his efforts to promote carbon market initiatives in East Africa, Mahlon played a pivotal role in crafting carbon trading regulations in partnership with government agencies, greatly aiding their effective implementation. Additionally, his leadership in orchestrating Kenya's inaugural carbon markets conference underscores his dedication to advancing the carbon market agenda locally. Looking ahead, Mahlon envisions a future where innovation plays a central role in East Africa's #carbonmarkets. He anticipates a shift towards technology-driven solutions for monitoring and verifying carbon offset projects. To realize this vision, he emphasizes the necessity for stakeholders to collaborate and invest in research, development, and capacity building, thereby maximizing the potential impact of these innovations on climate goals.

Africa faces a substantial financial challenge in achieving the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. According to Economic Commission for Africa in 2020, the continent needs approximately $1.3 trillion annually, totalling about $14.3-$19.5 trillion by 2030 depending on population growth. 

Regarding the decaying quality of our public services, the need to find more ressources to finance them has become crucial. However, let's be clear: Africa no longer needs neo-colonialism based debt or tax systems that, instead of encouraging and uplifting our local initiatives and efforts, widen the gap in which all our hopes for development are buried. We must, in our mentalities, our Actions and our policies, advocate for emergence by ourselves and finance ourselves. Mobilizing domestic resources is one of the key answers to reinforcing strong, sustainable and endogenous economic development.

🌪️ Anita Kundy, Euloge CAMARA and Pieter Bouwer are in town this week for a whirlwind tour of the Calgary Cleantech scene. We’re lucky to have these trade commissioners with their unique regional mandates in #Cleantech and #ClimateFinance here to meet with Alberta-based companies and discuss opportunities and challenges in their regions. A small sampling of the many things I’ve learned from them so far: 📈 Of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies, 9 are in #Africa 📈 Energy is one of the greatest sectors of opportunity in Africa, and one towards which a large proportion of climate funding is directed 📈 Although IFIs remain key players, private equity is increasingly choosing to invest in Africa-based projects Meanwhile, #EU environmental regulations are creating economic opportunities for Canadian companies not just within the EU, but in other parts of Europe, and countries for which the EU is a key export market. Thanks to everyone who attended today’s presentations and round table sessions, and especially to my colleagues who travelled from Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire and Germany to meet local companies, and to Carmen Sparrow, MBA and Valeriya Mynak who organized the event, with the valuable support of Calgary Economic Development and the Government of Alberta. 👏
