Fast food restaurants are prime candidates to take the automation route. Robotic arms for cleaning, processing and cooking are bound to be deployed in the frenetic atmosphere of QSR kitchens for reasons of safety, hygiene and speed of service. CaliExpress by Flippy in Pasadena, CA, will be using automation tools from Miso Robotics for burger preparation and fry cooking. Flippy is the robotic arm and sensor system that will cook the fries and the BurgerBot will create the burgers. The burgers will be made from fresh-ground beef after an order is placed, so speed is going to be of essence. Miso is calling this world’s first “fully autonomous restaurant” not only because of ‘robotic’ assistance with food preparation but because ordering and payment PopID stations are also being deployed. Once a customer sets up a facial recognition system and payment method orders can be placed without credit cards, loyalty specifics or a smartphone.
