Many governments, companies, and NGOs are developing projects to sell carbon credits: financial values assigned to the amount of greenhouse gas being kept or removed from the atmosphere. Lands where carbon credits are created often include the forests, grasslands, and coasts that local and Indigenous communities have stewarded for generations. Read how Mama Sofia and her peers from 26 Indigenous communities organized to demand justice from a major carbon project. https://lnkd.in/g9KX9g7B

In a representative democracy, we elect officials to make decisions on our behalf. However, when it comes to tough issues like the environment, governments often shy away from making the necessary changes. As individuals, we can make a difference and send a clear message to our elected officials that environmental issues matter. Rather than placing blame on the government, it's important to take individual responsibility and ask ourselves what we can do today to make a positive impact. Let's have a conversation with ourselves and take action towards a healthier planet. #environmentalresponsibility #individualaction #takeaction

Against a dramatic backcloth of dispute between governments of developed countries and less-developed ones regarding a greater commitment with nature, whilst environmental and ecological problems worsened, so wasting time; this article endorses the initiative that new actors should be added up, and they must be rural communities and small organisations which have been so far marginalised from large plans and actions set in motion worldwide. Why? because they are the most interested people given the vital meaning of the environment for them. (DOI: 10.31031/RMES.2024.10.000747).

The law is almost insufficient because it is often not written by the voices of the communities, people and ecosystems it represents. With the Ecocide Law however, we aim to give voice to those who historically haven’t had one. Stop Ecocide, Change the Law. #ecocidecrime #youth #ecocidelaw #youthforecocidelaw #ecosystems #ecospectrum

There is no route to 1.5°C without halting #deforestation. The UK government's independent Global Resource Initiative taskforce recommended implementing mandatory legal and sustainable forest risk commodities requirements for Financial Institutions: https://lnkd.in/ewnrU6JZ
🟪 The #DeforestationActionTracker 2023 report finds that financial institutions are allowing deforestation, conversion and human rights abuses to continue unchecked. ⚠️ 75% of the financial institutions assessed still do not have a public deforestation policy. 🌍 There is no way to reach #netzero without eliminating commodity-driven #deforestation, conversion and associated #humanrights abuses. Legal Director (White Collar Crime, Sanctions, Investigations, Asset Recovery, Compliance, Commercial Litigation)
I wrote a piece about the importance of the climate change case Verein Klima Seniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland. In my article, published by LexisNexis, I explain that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found that the Swiss government’s lack of action infringed upon the claimants’ right to respect for private and family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. I detail the court’s findings, the climate change obligations that countries have to meet and conclude that the case is a wake-up call that carries significant implications for businesses. "Nature provides us with everything we need to live. There can be no economic and social justice without environmental justice." The UK's Climate Emergency Centres network has shared details of the live public consultation happening until 9th February 2024. Please take 2 minutes of your day to complete this multiple choice survey: https://lnkd.in/eNekk99Y A national ecocide bill has been proposed by Monica Lennon MSP and it’s open to anyone, anywhere in the world to complete. This makes it almost like a global poll on the popularity of national ecocide legislation - and a big response to this will send a signal to other countries considering introducing a similar law. Any country that introduces this law will of course strengthen its existing environmental legislation, but will also boost support for the creation of a new international crime of ecocide. It's really important that as many people as possible take part and ASH's support of this legislation continues the message we have spread with our production of the climate justice film 'I Am More Dangerous Dead' which highlights the corporate ecocide taking place in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. I am sure that Ken Saro-Wiwa himself would champion this legislation if not executed for his mission against ecocide. We can all do something to protect the land that is our home. Nature and the climate are being severely damaged by acts of ecocide and we are all suffering as a result. It doesn’t need to be this way. It’s time to stop the harm. Together we can change the law, save nature and stop ecocide beginning with the proposed Ecocide (#Prevention) (#Scotland) Bill. Thank you in advance for your support of this law! #law #nature #ecocide #prevention #environment #pollution #climate #climateaction #climatejustice #IAMDD #bethechangeyouwanttoseeintheworld https://lnkd.in/eNekk99Y
