🚅VIRTUAL TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT! Trauma-Sensitive Care, hosted by Mission: Empowerment! 🗓️JUNE 12-13, 2024 - 10 am to 5 pm EDT 👉https://lnkd.in/gFy39uRV for more information & learning outline ✨This practical, interactive workshop will introduce participants to the principles and practices of Trauma-Informed Care. Kim’s presentation style will include a combination of lecture, video analysis, and small and large group discussions. ✨Trauma-Sensitive Care involves understanding how past trauma (including developmental trauma such as childhood abuse) impacts a service user's current behaviour, mental health and physical health. When trauma is misinterpreted, misunderstood, and minimized, people are left to respond repeatedly from wounded places, without awareness. When combined with developmental disability or substance abuse, the challenges for individuals living with trauma are compounded enormously. As a result, when agencies and service providers are not trauma-informed, they run the risk of misdiagnosis, inadequate treatment or service provision, damage to the helping relationship, and inadvertently re-traumatizing clients. 👥Who Should Attend? Any helping professional including (but not limited to) mental health professionals, health-care professionals, educators, first responders, hospital staff, chaplains and direct service workers. The workshop is also helpful for parents and foster parents. . #relationshipmatters #onlinelearning #distancelearning #kimbarthel #ot #occupationaltherapy #alliedhealth #alliedhealthprofoessionals #internationallearning #onlinecourses #behaviour #autism #sleep #sleepmatters #eatingandfeeding #pickyeating #eatingdisorders #sensory #psychosensory #traumainformedpractice #traumainformed #vestibularvisualmatters #vestibular #traumasensitive #vestibularvisual #neurobiology #OT #PT #therapy #therapists

Open Access ACAMH Featured Paper from the JCPP Trends in adolescent emotional problems in Wales between 2013 and 2019: the contribution of peer relationships https://bit.ly/3vEwKYf 'Epidemiological evidence shows a substantial increase in adolescent #EmotionalProblems in many countries, but reasons for this increase remain poorly understood. We tested change in emotional problems in a national sample of young people in Wales in 2013, 2017 and 2019 using identical symptom screens, and examined whether trends were accounted for by changes in youth friendship quality and #Bullying.' As BIPOC Mental Health Month (also known as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Month) comes to a close, we must continue reflecting on the work needed to ensure all communities receive the support they deserve. Research demonstrates that we’re failing to meet the mental health needs of too many BIPOC children. For instance, a 2018 study (see below) found that Black youth aged 5-12 are twice as likely to die by suicide compared to white peers. There is a clear need to provide greater access to care for all children as well as to increase the application of culturally responsive care among providers. BIPOC mental health matters — let's continue investing in efforts that will lead us to a world where everyone, no matter their race or ethnicity, has access to the effective mental health care they deserve. Free Access ACAMH Featured Paper from the JCPP Editorial: Prevention is the best cure – or is it? A cautionary tale https://bit.ly/3Sj8HXv 'In large parts of the Western world prevention is considered a necessary, core component of successful youth care practice. Yet, mental health problems in young people do not appear to have declined over the past decades. How to explain this paradox? In this editorial for the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, several possible explanations are explored, one of which centers around how prevention is being operationalized—primarily, nowadays, as a screen-and-resolve ‘troubleshooting’ approach, rather than as an approach that supports the development of good health, competence, and resilience.' Our study published this week highlights the significance of measuring ecological variables in clinical trials to identify “where” and “for whom” mental health treatments are most effective. We identified challenges that have limited the inclusion of neighborhood-level variables in youth psychotherapy trials and present three key considerations that clinical scientists must pay attention to as they design and conceptualize neighborhoods in youth psychotherapy research. By incorporating neighborhood context in clinical trials, psychotherapy researchers can contribute to more equitable and impactful interventions for youth and families.

Really interesting article about the importance of childhood adversity for mental health in adulthood published in JAMA Psychiatry and covered by The New York Times and other important news outlets. Interesante artículo sobre la importancia que los eventos adversos en la infancia tienes en la salud mental del adulto.
Happy to share our study on the association between adverse childhood experiences and adult psychiatric disorders, published in JAMA Psychiatry last week! By comparing twins that were discordant on exposure to childhood adversity we were able to separate the effect of childhood adversity from familial (genetic and early environmental) confounding.

‘Mental ill health, which has been the leading health and social issue impacting the lives and futures of young people for decades, has entered a dangerous phase’ is the first shocking sentence of the September 2024 issue of The Lancet Psychiatry below, a comprehensive research article on the alarming and detailed article from the Lancet Psychiatry Commission focusing on youth mental health. This report outlines the challenges faced by young people, including the effects of climate change, socioeconomic disparities, and the digital landscape, which have contributed to worsening mental health among adolescents and young adults. It emphasises the need for increased investment, equitable access to care, and the involvement of youth in creating solutions. Thanks for sharing this with me today, Tony Ritchie, whom is a Director and Psychologist at the incredible Blue Mountains Clinic, to advocate for younger people who need more support and attention from our governments. It was amazing to chat with you and continue collaborating together. Abstract: https://lnkd.in/gCZTJqSP #Mentalhealth #Youth

💖 I help healthcare providers become antiracism warriors and children and adults transform their lives 💖. Psychiatric Fairy Godmother 💖 Independent Scholar Activist 💖 Truth Teller 💖 Fashionista 💖 See summary 4 more
Doctors engage in pro-White (anti-Black/anti-Brown) implicit bias at least as much as the public. But their unchecked racial socialization impacts clinical decision-making, sacrificing patients' lives in the process. Remarkably, however, there are no training or professionalization mandates requiring them to learn and act against racist tropes, like the Mammy trope depicted below. Healthcare providers who raise their consciousness about these vile tropes--which include the Jezebel, Sapphire, Indigenous Savage, and Immigrant Other tropes--counter this dangerous pro-White implicit bias. They preserve the humanity of the people they care for as part of their oath. They challenge these tropes by prescribing humanizing, antiracist language that rejects the degradation driving inequities. Learn more about the racist tropes and ideologies shaping healthcare at our FREE Antiracism in Mental Health Lunch and Learn tomorrow. I'll share more about the Antiracism in Mental Health Fellowship, the first of its kind intensive training program for healthcare providers. It features 75 bulletproof antiracist clinical strategies to protect against racism's harm.
