Oshana police cells overcrowded: Maria David THE Namibian Police Force in the Oshana Region is being forced to release criminals due to a lack of space in the police holding cells. Oshana police commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, indicated that they recently had to release some of the undocumented individuals found in the region. Sakaria revealed this during the commissioning of the Oshoopala satellite police station on Wednesday. He said that while they are actively removing criminals from the streets, it has become a challenge to ensure they are kept in custody. --- “We arrested 16 people without documentation and took them to the police station, but the cells are full. I was told in the morning to return with their documents, and one has not returned until now,” he said. Furthermore, Sakaria said that a total of 26 police officers are stationed at Oshoopala, with patrols having commenced to ensure the safety of the residents. He stressed that patrols have been intensified in the region to combat crime. The Inspector-General of the Namibian Police (NamPol), Lieutenant-General Joseph Shikongo, has also recently raised concerns about overcrowding in police cells across the country. He revealed that many of the country’s police cells are experiencing severe overcrowding, such as the Wanaheda Police Cells, which have held over 200 inmates at once, and the Katima Mulilo Police Cells, which are designed for 80 but have held up to 300 inmates. Mbappe strikes as Madrid claim win at Celta Vigo: Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior’s goals earned Real Madrid an entertaining 2-1 win at Celta Vigo on Saturday to pull them level with La Liga leaders Barcelona. France striker Mbappe started and sent the Spanish champions ahead amid reports he is being investigated for an alleged rape during a visit to Sweden. The 25-year-old was criticised in his homeland for not appearing in his country’s recent Nations League matches before the Swedish media reports emerged following his trip during the international break, which Mbappe labelled “fake news”. Williot Swedberg levelled for Celta, who might have snatched a draw, but Vinicius tucked home what proved Madrid’s winner after 66 minutes. Madrid, unbeaten in 42 La Liga matches, host Barcelona next weekend in the Clasico, after the Catalans welcome Sevilla on Sunday. “I’m happy because we won after the international break which is not always easy,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told Real Madrid TV. “When they equalised our changes gave new energy to the team and it was a very important win. “(Mbappe and Vinicius) trained very well in the break, improved their conditions, and they started today’s game very well and they have to continue.” With captain Dani Carvajal sidelined for months to come, Ancelotti replaced the Spanish right-back with Lucas Vazquez. The Italian set up with a three centre-back system, breaking away from his favoured four-man defensive line to accomodate Vazquez as a wing-back. Celta Vigo midfielder Swedberg missed a fine opening in the first half with Thibaut Courtois tipping his effort wide when the Swede ran through on goal. Madrid’s new look defence gave Celta plenty of breathing room in attack but the visitors also looked dangerous at the other end, without carving out clear-cut chances. Mbappe slammed Madrid ahead with a long-range effort, which flew into the top corner after Fran Beltran gave the ball away and Eduardo Camavinga laid it off to the striker. It was the forward’s first strike from outside the area for Madrid, his sixth league goal and his eighth in 12 appearances across all competitions since joining from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Celta striker Borja Iglesias rolled home from an offside position as Claudio Giraldez’s mid-table side searched for an equaliser. It was a scrappy yet lively clash and Vinicius headed over Fede Valverde’s cross and fired a near post effort off-target before the break. Swedberg pulled Celta level with a calm finish in the 51st minute after a fine move from the Galicians, with former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza curling in a low cross for the midfielder to stroke home. Vinicius had a goal ruled out for offside against Mbappe in the build-up as the second half continued with the same openness as the first. ‘A top professional’ Javier Manquillo made a brave block to…

Shoprite chief executive salary package hits R83m: Shoprite chief executive Pieter Engelbrecht has seen his salary, inclusive of bonuses, rise to R83.3 million in the 2024 financial year. This cements his place as South Africa’s best-paid retail chief executive. Engelbrecht earned a 6.6% inflationary adjusted increase as part of a revamped executive compensation structure that includes the new executive deferred incentive. It comes as the country’s biggest private sector employer navigates a challenging economy fraught with high unemployment and elevated interest rates. Over the past three years, Engelbrecht’s salary has steadily increased, from R63.5 million in 2022 to R64.7 million in 2023. Remuneration committee chair Peter Cooper cites strong financial results as a key factor for this increase. “The increase is also affected in the current year, due to the ESP performance shares being awarded in September 2020 at R184.96, rising by 46% to a year end volume weighted average price of R270.40 for single-figure reporting purposes.” In the year under review, Shoprite reported a 12% rise in group sales and a 12.4% increase in trading profit, alongside a 7.4% increase in dividends per share. Chief financial officer Anton de Bruyn received a 16% adjustment. The group says this change was implemented following a benchmarking review to ensure competitive pay in a challenging economic environment. The group has also taken steps to increase wages for its lowest-paid workers. Effective 1 March 2024, the national prescribed minimum wage for general assistants was raised to R27.58 an hour, with Shoprite ensuring compliance across all new appointments. The group says all general staff employed as of 1 May 2024 received an annual increase, resulting in an average hourly rate of R30.63, which is 11.1% above the national minimum wage. However, the hefty rise in executive compensation raises concerns when compared with the earnings of the company’s lowest-paid workers. According to a report by Just Share, the average chief executive in the retail and wholesale sector earns 597 times more than the lowest-paid worker. At Shoprite, the chief executive earns 991 times more than the lowest-paid employee, the report says. The report looks at major players Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Pepkor, TFG, Woolworths, Mr Price, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Truworths and Spar. It says these companies collectively employ nearly 390 000 full-time employees and generate annual revenues of R833.7 billion. However, the average lowest-paid worker in the wholesale and retail sector would need to work for 21 months to earn what an average chief executive in this sector earns in one day, Just Share says. “Through our Shoprite Employee Trust, established by Shoprite Checkers with 40-million shares in 2022, we are ensuring our employees are aligned to benefit from the group’s performance. As things stand this…

Juve squeeze past 10-man Lazio to move level with leaders Napoli: Juventus moved level on points with Serie A leaders Napoli on Saturday after squeezing past 10-man Lazio 1-0, while AC Milan overcame having to play for over an hour themselves with 10 men to beat Udinese by the same score. Mario Gila’s own goal with five minutes remaining gave Juve the win in Turin, a crushing blow for Lazio who acquitted themselves well after Alessio Romagnoli was sent off in the 24th minute. Thiago Motta’s Juve looked set to dominate when Romganoli was shown a straight red card for taking out Pierre Kalulu as he raced towards goal. But Lazio had little trouble holding off Juve’s uninspired attacking and had to rely on Gila poking Juan Cabal’s low cross into his own goal in order to take the three points. Juve have a better goal difference than Napoli but stay behind their rivals, coached by Antonio Conte, as they have played a game more. Napoli can ensure they maintain their lead with a win at Empoli in Sunday’s lunctime match, while champions Inter Milan, who sit two points off the pace alongside their local rivals Milan, are at Roma. Battling Milan Samuel Chukwueze’s 13th-minute strike looked like being the first of a comfortable win for Milan but ended up being the winning goal as the seven-time European champions held on for the points. Their task was made difficult by Tijjani Reijnders being sent off in the 29th minute for a clumsy foul on Sandi Lovric who would have been clean through on goal had the Netherlands midfielder not clipped his heels. “It was two matches in one. The first one finished after half an hour, 30 minutes of character, quality and the sort of play which is close to what I want,” said Fonseca. The Portuguese has had to field questions about ill discipline in the dressing room, especially among star players like suspended Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, who was left on the bench for the entire match. “After the sending off it was all about the team spirit,” he added. “If anyone doubted that were a united team today was the demonstration that we are.” Tammy Abraham should have sealed the points for Milan with 15 minutes remaining when he somehow managed, moments after replacing Alvaro Morata, to both fluff a golden chance on the rebound and injure his right shoulder at the same time. Milan later revealed that England international Abraham had not fractured the shoulder as previously feared. Ultra protests The hosts looked to have been sucker-punched when Christian Kabasele bundled home for Udinese in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but a huge roar rang around the ground when, after a long VAR check, the goal was ruled out for Jurgen Ekkelenkamp’s toes straying offside. Milan’s win came in front of a flat San Siro following the decision of Milan’s hardcore “ultras” supporters to stand in silence for most of the match in protest at…

The Deceptive Dreams of Green Hydrogen Benefits in Namibia: As Namibia dives headfirst into the uncharted territory of a green hydrogen economy, we find ourselves at a crucial juncture requiring not just optimism but rigorous scrutiny. While proponents tout the benefits of this supposedly clean energy source, a closer examination reveals that these claims often mask a troubling reality, if not a dangerous illusion: the threat to the environment, local communities, and the very essence of equitable economic advancement. EXTRACTION TO THE FORE Advocates of green hydrogen investments often proclaim this industry will generate much-needed employment and invigorate local economies. However, the reality is often very different. Many of the jobs created may be temporary or geared toward fulfilling the needs of foreign experts rather than accommodating local labour. As foreign investors flood into Namibia with promises of prosperity, critics rightfully ask: who truly benefits from these initiatives? Will the employment opportunities be anything but fleeting phases of a foreign-backed experiment? Without significant local engagement and investment in skills development, local communities risk remaining on the margins, watching as foreign corporations profit while they grapple with economic uncertainty compounded by failed promises. The historical exploitation of Namibia’s mineral wealth by former colonial powers casts a long shadow over the current gold rush for green hydrogen. The lofty ambitions of establishing Namibia as a major supplier of green hydrogen might translate into a neo-colonial economic structure, where resources are extracted for the benefit of wealthier nations. This is in stark contrast to the pledge of sustainable local prosperity, leaving Namibians to struggle with inadequate infrastructure, lost opportunities, and economic disempowerment. WATER SCARCITY BEING IGNORED While green hydrogen is touted as a clean energy source, the underlying environmental costs are alarming. As Namibia seeks large-scale hydrogen production, the region’s critical water scarcity is conveniently overlooked. The demand for water to support hydrogen production could exacerbate existing tensions within local communities who depend on these resources. Picture farms going dry and communities suffering from extreme water shortages all in the name of a ‘clean’ energy source that will mainly cater to foreign consumers. This trajectory is not just unsustainable, it is a potential time bomb with the potential to devastate ecosystems and livelihoods alike. LEGAL MINEFIELD Navigating the green hydrogen market without a robust legal infrastructure constitutes a dangerous gamble for Namibia. Current laws insufficiently address the specific challenges posed by green hydrogen production, leaving local communities ill-equipped to protect their rights and environments…

Kane hat-trick sends Bayern top past Leipzig: A second-half Harry Kane hat-trick took Bayern Munich back to the top of the Bundesliga, ahead of RB Leipzig, with a 4-0 home win over Stuttgart on Saturday. Leipzig’s earlier 2-0 win at Mainz had allowed them to leapfrog Bayern into top spot, while Kane came into the match without a goal for club or country in four games — his longest drought since moving to Germany. Stuttgart, who surprisingly finished one spot ahead of Bayern in second place last season, held the hosts at bay but the dam eventually broke in the 57th minute, when Kane’s long-range effort dribbled past goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel. Kane added a second just three minutes later, clipping the ball through a crowded penalty box and past Nuebel to double Bayern’s lead. The England captain pounced on a loose ball on the 80-minute mark to bring up his third, chalking up his sixth hat-trick in Bayern colours and his 57th goal for the German giants in all competitions. “It was an important game for us coming off a few (bad) results. Here in front of our home fans, we took it up a level in the second half. It’s what we want to do, we want to take teams to levels they can’t,” Kane told Sky Germany. Coach Vincent Kompany said his side would “celebrate a little, but then get going again against Barcelona”, who are managed by former Bayern coach Hansi Flick. France forward Kingsley Coman scored in the final minute to complete the win. Bayern were dealt a blow however, with the club issuing a statement that Aleksandar Pavlovic had broken his collarbone during the match, with German tabloid Bild reporting the midfielder may need surgery. Earlier on Saturday, goals from Xavi Simons and captain Willi Orban took Leipzig past Mainz, just days out from their home Champions League clash with Liverpool. Still unbeaten this season in Germany alongside Bayern, Leipzig took the lead after 20 minutes thanks to an excellent Simons solo goal. Leipzig captain Orban tapped in a rebound from a Lois Openda cross to put his side 2-0 ahead. Orban told Sky: “We could have finished things off earlier but we’re happy with the win.” Leverkusen beat Frankfurt Victor Boniface’s 72nd-minute goal was the difference as Bayer Leverkusen beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home. Leverkusen were given an early chance when Amine Adli was felled in the box, sending Boniface to the spot after a long VAR review. The Nigerian’s shot, too soft and central, was gobbled up by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. Just five minutes later, the referee was sent to the video screen again, this time finding a penalty for Frankfurt, with Robert Andrich lightly touching Omar Marmoush’s foot. Marmoush showed Boniface how it is done, blasting a low shot left to give the visitors the lead on 16 minutes. The Egyptian now has an incredible nine goals and five assists in just seven league games this season.…

Bank of Namibia launches financial sector sustainability framework: The Bank of Namibia (BoN) has established a sustainability framework aimed at institutionalising sustainability principles within the organisation and promoting the greening of the financial system. The announcement was made at a thought leadership event, titled ‘Leveraging Innovation for Green Finance’, hosted by the bank just outside Windhoek yesterday. “This framework, however, is only the beginning,” BoN governor Johannes !Gawaxab said at the event. “It is part of a broader strategy to reshape the financial system in line with our national goals of fostering resilience and sustainability.” “As we face the dual pressures of environmental degradation and associated economic instability, it is imperative that we, as custodians of the financial system, integrate sustainability at every level,” the governor said. The event was also attended by deputy minister of environment, forestry and tourism Heather Sibungo, Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority chief executive Kenneth Matomola, South African Reserve Bank deputy governor Fundi Tshazibana, as well as various representatives from the banking and non-banking financial sector. In her keynote address, deputy minister Sibungo stressed the importance of sustainability for Namibia’s economy. “With over 70% of our population dependent on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture and tourism, the changing climate situation threatens not only our environment, but also our livelihoods, food security and overall economic stability,” she said. “Innovative financial mechanisms such as green bonds and sustainability-linked loans to channel investments into projects that address both mitigation and adaptation needs should be prioritised.” The deputy minister also referred to several successful sustainable financing initiatives that have been launched in the past, including the Environmental Investment Fund which has mobilised more than N$3.6 billion to date. Other initiatives referenced by Sibungu include several green and sustainability bonds issued by Bank Windhoek, Standard Bank Namibia and RMB Namibia with a total value of N$980 million, as well as Nedbank’s ‘Go Green Fund’. According to this year’s Country Focus Report by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Namibia will need about N$94 billion between 2021 and 2030 to meet its climate change targets. According to AfDB, an average of N$10 billion is needed annually to meet Namibia’s green growth objectives. These include the government’s goals of reaching 70% renewable energy generation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 91% compared to a business-as-usual trajectory by 2030. “We are rapidly expanding our renewable energy portfolio and etching ourselves as an energy hub, with solar, wind and green hydrogen solutions being developed to increase our energy security, while…

Arsenal shocked by Bournemouth, Man Utd ease pressure on Ten Hag: Arsenal suffered their first Premier League defeat since April as William Saliba’s red card triggered a shock 2-0 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday, while Manchester United eased the pressure on Erik ten Hag as they fought back to beat Brentford 2-1. Mikel Arteta’s side had started the campaign with a 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions, but that streak was shattered in controversial circumstances on the south coast. Arsenal defender Saliba was sent off after half-an-hour for a professional foul on Evanilson that was initially punished with a booking before being upgraded to a red card after a VAR review. The Gunners finally cracked in the closing stages as Ryan Christie put Bournemouth ahead. Justin Kluivert’s penalty ensured Arsenal would lose for the first time in the league since their 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa in April. It was a bitter blow for Arsenal, who would have gone top with a victory but now have to face title rivals Liverpool next weekend without the suspended Saliba. Third-placed Arsenal will be four points behind Liverpool by then if the leaders defeat Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday. “It’s very difficult to win in the Premier League with 10 men for 60 minutes, it’s just an accident waiting to happen,” Arteta said. “We have had to go through it in three games and that cost us the game.” United manager Ten Hag had defiantly slammed “fairy tales and lies” about his future at the club on Friday as the beleaguered boss insisted he was not in danger of the sack. But the 54-year-old is widely believed to be fighting to save his job after presiding over United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90. Ten Hag was surely teetering on the brink of being dismissed after Brentford pounced to take the lead in first-half stoppage time when Ethan Pinnock met a corner with a powerful header. The goal sparked a furious reaction from Ten Hag, who was booked for protesting about Matthijs de Ligt’s enforced absence to have treatment on a bloodied head wound. But Alejandro Garnacho started United’s revival in the 47th minute as the Argentinian met Marcus Rashford’s angled pass with a superb volley into the top corner. Rasmus Hojlund bagged the decisive second goal in the 62nd minute, taking Bruno Fernandes’ clever flick and clipping a composed finish. “Pressure? Pressure is always there,” Ten Hag said. “We have to win every game, so when we are 1-0 down we have to see how we turn this around. “We felt some injustice and we use this as fuel for the second half. We scored two great goals.” United’s first win in six games in all competitions was only their third victory in eight league matches this term as they moved up to 11th place. Spurs on song Tottenham got back on track with a 4-1 rout of West Ham, easing the pain of their recent collapse in a 3-2 loss at…
