New Web Series “Tsek” dishes Namibian humour to the world: Entertainment Reporter THE vibrant and bustling streets of Windhoek come to life in the new Namibian web series “Tsek”, where imminent threat looms from marauding gangs, or a neighbourhood dog that is all too eager to bite a chunk from one’s derriere. The mini web series premiered on the 9th of October 2024 in the capital and is written by Jenny Kandenge, Inna Goroh, Jacob Shichilenge and directed by Goroh as well. The miniseries follows the life of Jonas, a socially awkward and frigid young man, who is played by seasoned Namibian actor Bret Kamwi. NEW WEB SERIES: The trailer of the Tsek web series. Video: Inchiology Studios. --- As soon as the camera starts rolling, the series offers comedic relief as the all too timid Jonas, labelled as the “moegoe” in the film, stands up to various, seemingly mundane adversities in his everyday life, all while ultimately just trying to get to work on time. “Our goal for the series was to create something we hadn’t seen locally and maybe even within the SADC region, maybe Africa. But we wanted the production value to be high – well, as high as we could possibly make it, within the budget available. We think the show is a first of its kind because of how we tackled the themes, the effects, the filming, and the awesome team of creatives behind it,” Goroh said in an interview with Informanté. The mini series, which has a total of five episodes, can be described as quirky and something refreshing on the scene. In terms of cinematography, the camera is like water, transitioning from scene to scene fluidly and at times at a fast pace, elevating the sense of anxiety the main character feels. The overall acting of the cast is subtle and not too over the top, with the main character, Jonas, delivering a stellar performance; his mannerisms and body language offer the viewers a window into the turmoil that brews within. The cast includes Theodor Goagosteb, Abigail Goliath, Lugino Goraseb, Fausino Paulus, Whilzahn Gelderbloem, and Elago Akwake. The mini series can be viewed on YouTube at Inchiology Studios. The film shines a light on the immense talent within the Namibian film industry, illuminating a sunless alcove that often goes unnoticed. Oshana police cells overcrowded: Maria David THE Namibian Police Force in the Oshana Region is being forced to release criminals due to a lack of space in the police holding cells. Oshana police commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, indicated that they recently had to release some of the undocumented individuals found in the region. Sakaria revealed this during the commissioning of the Oshoopala satellite police station on Wednesday. He said that while they are actively removing criminals from the streets, it has become a challenge to ensure they are kept in custody. --- “We arrested 16 people without documentation and took them to the police station, but the cells are full. I was told in the morning to return with their documents, and one has not returned until now,” he said. Furthermore, Sakaria said that a total of 26 police officers are stationed at Oshoopala, with patrols having commenced to ensure the safety of the residents. He stressed that patrols have been intensified in the region to combat crime. The Inspector-General of the Namibian Police (NamPol), Lieutenant-General Joseph Shikongo, has also recently raised concerns about overcrowding in police cells across the country. He revealed that many of the country’s police cells are experiencing severe overcrowding, such as the Wanaheda Police Cells, which have held over 200 inmates at once, and the Katima Mulilo Police Cells, which are designed for 80 but have held up to 300 inmates. Mbappe strikes as Madrid claim win at Celta Vigo: Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior’s goals earned Real Madrid an entertaining 2-1 win at Celta Vigo on Saturday to pull them level with La Liga leaders Barcelona. France striker Mbappe started and sent the Spanish champions ahead amid reports he is being investigated for an alleged rape during a visit to Sweden. The 25-year-old was criticised in his homeland for not appearing in his country’s recent Nations League matches before the Swedish media reports emerged following his trip during the international break, which Mbappe labelled “fake news”. Williot Swedberg levelled for Celta, who might have snatched a draw, but Vinicius tucked home what proved Madrid’s winner after 66 minutes. Madrid, unbeaten in 42 La Liga matches, host Barcelona next weekend in the Clasico, after the Catalans welcome Sevilla on Sunday. “I’m happy because we won after the international break which is not always easy,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told Real Madrid TV. “When they equalised our changes gave new energy to the team and it was a very important win. “(Mbappe and Vinicius) trained very well in the break, improved their conditions, and they started today’s game very well and they have to continue.” With captain Dani Carvajal sidelined for months to come, Ancelotti replaced the Spanish right-back with Lucas Vazquez. The Italian set up with a three centre-back system, breaking away from his favoured four-man defensive line to accomodate Vazquez as a wing-back. Celta Vigo midfielder Swedberg missed a fine opening in the first half with Thibaut Courtois tipping his effort wide when the Swede ran through on goal. Madrid’s new look defence gave Celta plenty of breathing room in attack but the visitors also looked dangerous at the other end, without carving out clear-cut chances. Mbappe slammed Madrid ahead with a long-range effort, which flew into the top corner after Fran Beltran gave the ball away and Eduardo Camavinga laid it off to the striker. It was the forward’s first strike from outside the area for Madrid, his sixth league goal and his eighth in 12 appearances across all competitions since joining from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Celta striker Borja Iglesias rolled home from an offside position as Claudio Giraldez’s mid-table side searched for an equaliser. It was a scrappy yet lively clash and Vinicius headed over Fede Valverde’s cross and fired a near post effort off-target before the break. Swedberg pulled Celta level with a calm finish in the 51st minute after a fine move from the Galicians, with former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza curling in a low cross for the midfielder to stroke home. Vinicius had a goal ruled out for offside against Mbappe in the build-up as the second half continued with the same openness as the first. ‘A top professional’ Javier Manquillo made a brave block to…

Shoprite chief executive salary package hits R83m: Shoprite chief executive Pieter Engelbrecht has seen his salary, inclusive of bonuses, rise to R83.3 million in the 2024 financial year. This cements his place as South Africa’s best-paid retail chief executive. Engelbrecht earned a 6.6% inflationary adjusted increase as part of a revamped executive compensation structure that includes the new executive deferred incentive. It comes as the country’s biggest private sector employer navigates a challenging economy fraught with high unemployment and elevated interest rates. Over the past three years, Engelbrecht’s salary has steadily increased, from R63.5 million in 2022 to R64.7 million in 2023. Remuneration committee chair Peter Cooper cites strong financial results as a key factor for this increase. “The increase is also affected in the current year, due to the ESP performance shares being awarded in September 2020 at R184.96, rising by 46% to a year end volume weighted average price of R270.40 for single-figure reporting purposes.” In the year under review, Shoprite reported a 12% rise in group sales and a 12.4% increase in trading profit, alongside a 7.4% increase in dividends per share. Chief financial officer Anton de Bruyn received a 16% adjustment. The group says this change was implemented following a benchmarking review to ensure competitive pay in a challenging economic environment. The group has also taken steps to increase wages for its lowest-paid workers. Effective 1 March 2024, the national prescribed minimum wage for general assistants was raised to R27.58 an hour, with Shoprite ensuring compliance across all new appointments. The group says all general staff employed as of 1 May 2024 received an annual increase, resulting in an average hourly rate of R30.63, which is 11.1% above the national minimum wage. However, the hefty rise in executive compensation raises concerns when compared with the earnings of the company’s lowest-paid workers. According to a report by Just Share, the average chief executive in the retail and wholesale sector earns 597 times more than the lowest-paid worker. At Shoprite, the chief executive earns 991 times more than the lowest-paid employee, the report says. The report looks at major players Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Pepkor, TFG, Woolworths, Mr Price, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Truworths and Spar. It says these companies collectively employ nearly 390 000 full-time employees and generate annual revenues of R833.7 billion. However, the average lowest-paid worker in the wholesale and retail sector would need to work for 21 months to earn what an average chief executive in this sector earns in one day, Just Share says. “Through our Shoprite Employee Trust, established by Shoprite Checkers with 40-million shares in 2022, we are ensuring our employees are aligned to benefit from the group’s performance. As things stand this…

Juve squeeze past 10-man Lazio to move level with leaders Napoli: Juventus moved level on points with Serie A leaders Napoli on Saturday after squeezing past 10-man Lazio 1-0, while AC Milan overcame having to play for over an hour themselves with 10 men to beat Udinese by the same score. Mario Gila’s own goal with five minutes remaining gave Juve the win in Turin, a crushing blow for Lazio who acquitted themselves well after Alessio Romagnoli was sent off in the 24th minute. Thiago Motta’s Juve looked set to dominate when Romganoli was shown a straight red card for taking out Pierre Kalulu as he raced towards goal. But Lazio had little trouble holding off Juve’s uninspired attacking and had to rely on Gila poking Juan Cabal’s low cross into his own goal in order to take the three points. Juve have a better goal difference than Napoli but stay behind their rivals, coached by Antonio Conte, as they have played a game more. Napoli can ensure they maintain their lead with a win at Empoli in Sunday’s lunctime match, while champions Inter Milan, who sit two points off the pace alongside their local rivals Milan, are at Roma. Battling Milan Samuel Chukwueze’s 13th-minute strike looked like being the first of a comfortable win for Milan but ended up being the winning goal as the seven-time European champions held on for the points. Their task was made difficult by Tijjani Reijnders being sent off in the 29th minute for a clumsy foul on Sandi Lovric who would have been clean through on goal had the Netherlands midfielder not clipped his heels. “It was two matches in one. The first one finished after half an hour, 30 minutes of character, quality and the sort of play which is close to what I want,” said Fonseca. The Portuguese has had to field questions about ill discipline in the dressing room, especially among star players like suspended Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, who was left on the bench for the entire match. “After the sending off it was all about the team spirit,” he added. “If anyone doubted that were a united team today was the demonstration that we are.” Tammy Abraham should have sealed the points for Milan with 15 minutes remaining when he somehow managed, moments after replacing Alvaro Morata, to both fluff a golden chance on the rebound and injure his right shoulder at the same time. Milan later revealed that England international Abraham had not fractured the shoulder as previously feared. Ultra protests The hosts looked to have been sucker-punched when Christian Kabasele bundled home for Udinese in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but a huge roar rang around the ground when, after a long VAR check, the goal was ruled out for Jurgen Ekkelenkamp’s toes straying offside. Milan’s win came in front of a flat San Siro following the decision of Milan’s hardcore “ultras” supporters to stand in silence for most of the match in protest at…
