Google has introduced Med-Gemini, a new family of competent multimodal models specialized in medicine. The model has been evaluated on 14 medical benchmarks, establishing new state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on 10 of them. On the popular MedQA (USMLE) benchmark, the best-performing Med-Gemini model achieves SOTA performance of 91.1% accuracy. However, further rigorous evaluation will be crucial before real-world deployment in this safety-critical domain.

Be wary when you hear a study is “Double blind” At #AAPM 2024 Annual Meeting, and hearing a lot of companies tout that they have results from a “double-blind” study. I think they are using this term to mean that their study is high-quality and we should be using their device/drug/product. What they don’t realize, by using this term, they may be having the opposite effect. The term “double-blind” is antiquated and outdated. It’s also ambiguous as it isn’t clear which two groups are blinded. In fact, if it is only “double-blinded” the study is at high risk of bias as there are up to five groups that should blinded (patients, clinicians, investigators, analysts, adjudicators). The term “double-blind” has been retired in other areas of medicine over 2 decades ago (see link), so when you hear someone use this term, it suggests that they may not up to date on current research practices. In this seminar, Minh introduces MedMGF, a multi-level graph-based framework that enhances classification by integrating patient medical profiles and relationships. Firstly: Patient Medical Profile Representation: We model multi-layered patient medical profiles from hospitalization records, embedding crucial health data in a graph format. These profiles form a patient-patient network based on medical history similarities. Secondly, Classification on Imbalanced Data: To address class imbalance in medical datasets, we modify the Focal Loss (FL) function. This, combined with the MedMGF architecture, improves classification performance over traditional methods like Graphical Convolutional Networks with Binary Cross Entropy, FL, and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE). This framework can significantly enhance early diagnosis and patient management, especially in critical conditions like pediatric sepsis.
