The Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria focuses on the complementary fields of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture.  Following an ecosystemic approach, the Department’s three programmes and its research focus areas are mutually supportive and are often integrated into transdisciplinary research projects with partners in industry, government and local communities. The Department’s research foci are built around the objective of creating resource-efficient, resilient, and regenerative built environments, that respect both the landscape and the cultural context, improving ecological integrity, while contributing to a sense of meaningful place and social-ecological well-being within rapidly changing local and global contexts. What can vernacular construction teach us about post-carbon building? At Studio Bark we engaged with the National Society of Master Thatchers to better understand this time-honoured building technique. The outcome was a design that is at once grounded in place and tradition while responding to the imperative of the present. The building is primarily grass-based construction, with straw cassettes proposed for the main fabric elements and thatch for the roofs, allowing it to sequester significant amounts of carbon, which has been captured over short growing cycles. A nice aspect of this project was habitat integration, with the north elevation serving as a nesting wall for birds. The ‘chimney’ elements are bat roost boxes. #vernacular #straw #thatch #carbon
