HR: “We’ve been looking for someone for this role for the past 8 months.” Please. PLEASE don’t think this is a point of pride. This was something HR told one of my clients recently. The reason why they haven’t found someone in 8 months is absolutely not because there isn’t a good candidate out there. It’s because they AREN’T WILLING TO PAY. Before they even extended the offer, HR pulled out the old tried-and-true method for underpaying candidates: they asked her what her salary requirements were. She said - that’s not how this works. If you want to give me an offer, then give me an offer. So they did - about 50k under market value for the role. When she told them what she’d need to make the transition, they came up by 10k. This is not a negotiation. This is BARGAINING. Stop trying to get top level candidates for bargain basement prices!!! 🔆 thought for today - As HR professionals, it is our moral duty to circle back with every candidate who has interviewed with us. Each candidate has invested time, money, and effort, and has come with the hope of joining our organization. We should connect with them the very next day to provide constructive feedback, allowing them to improve for future opportunities. This respectful and considerate approach not only helps candidates grow but also upholds our commitment to a fair and transparent hiring process. Happy Friday! For New Years, I will reflect on certain areas of my life and I wanted to share my professional learning lessons from 2023. These are the things that I feel separate regular HR from cool HR (Mean Girls Edition!) 1. Be transparent with your candidates and internal employees on everything you possibly can ranging from realistic timelines and offers, layoffs, upcoming strategies, etc 2. Get salary ranges on the first phone screen so candidates can decide if your open matches their salary requirements/ career goals 3. Defending the business is normally the best way to protect employees 4. Authentic people garner trust with others way faster than people who aren't being themselves 5. Once the meeting ends, the only person to overthink what you said is you- so say what you mean and do as you say 6. Treat and COMMUNICATE with others the way you would want to be communicated to 7. Complaints will occur and HR must consider all factors and critically think in these meetings to uncover the whole truth. There's always 2 sides to every story! #hr #recruitment

Pay inequity was a real thing. ➡️$174,000 is the new salary⬅️ This is a $44,000 salary increase‼️ Struggles: ➡️ She felt like she was underpaid and based on research and the salary of her counterparts, she was! ➡️ She had been applying for months and wasn’t getting #interviews ➡️ She went to ask for a promotion/raise based on her performance and was denied even though she was outperforming 90% of the office Successes: ✨ She worked with me to optimize her resume for #managementjobs ✨ After the first 2 weeks she got an interview and an offer, but it wasn’t the right fit for her. HR: I rejected a candidate's job application twice, thinking they were overqualified. Fast forward to today, I'm working with them on a project and I'm blown away by their dedication and work ethic. The lesson I learned: never underestimate the power of a second chance. Don't dismiss candidates just because they don't fit your initial expectations.
