Criminal Justice and Criminology expert, Fmr Det Insp (QPS), media commentator, consultant, expert witness. (views are my own, reposts and likes do not = endorsement)
Why do this? LNP Leader David Crisafulli announces ‘three-tier’ child sex offender register plan. Parents will be able to search photos, names and locations of convicted child sex offenders under an LNP plan to expose pedophiles. In 2018 a study by the AIC showed that public child sex registries had little to no effect. "This paper reviews the latest empirical evidence from Australia and overseas regarding the effectiveness of public and non-public sex offender registries. Results show that while public sex offender registries may have a small general deterrent effect on first time offenders, they do not reduce recidivism. Further, despite having strong public support, they appear to have little effect on levels of fear in the community. While the evidence is limited to a small number of US studies, non-public sex offender registries do appear to reduce reoffending by assisting law enforcement. The review concludes by highlighting important considerations to help inform future decisions about the feasibility of a public register in Australia." “The science on these issues is pretty consistent: sex offender registries don’t reduce recidivism (and might increase it), and restricting where people with past sex convictions can reside does nothing to increase public safety, and arguably decreases it.” —Guy Hamilton-Smith (Leading With Conviction™ 2019) Read more: #SexOffenderRegistries #SexOffenses #SexConvictions #PublicSafety

The Supreme Court has said raising awareness about the realities of child sexual exploitative material and its consequences through public campaigns can help reduce its prevalence. These campaigns should aim to destigmatise reporting and encourage community vigilance. The apex court strongly favoured for comprehensive sex education which can promote healthy attitudes towards sexuality and relationships, and can counteract the distorted perceptions often associated with the consumption of child pornography. (The bottom line is digitally discriminating and deplatforming sex workers is an act of violence. Not listening or collaborating with the very communities you are writing policy about has life altering repercussions for said communities and those apart of them. Some of us are being forced into more dangerous lines of work because we cannot work safely online or utilize safe working practices such as screening or Decriminalization. It’s unacceptable and sex workers need protections now. Our voices have been left out of policy and legislation for too long, we don’t need legislators speaking for us when we have voices. It’s time to start collaborating with sex workers and reflecting our needs in everyday life. Sex work is work and we need human rights.” ) Page 146 Survey Participant #sexworkpolicy https://a.co/d/2i1HfbY

I would like to take a moment to share a video featuring a current sex worker who responds to the negative comments he has received regarding his profession. This video resonates with me for several reasons: 1. The experiences of sex workers can vary widely. Some may choose this profession for financial independence, flexibility, or personal empowerment, while others might enter it due to economic necessity. It's crucial to recognize that there is no singular narrative that defines all sex workers. 2. Many sex workers develop a range of skills through their work, including negotiation, communication, and emotional intelligence. These skills can be transferable to other professions and contribute to personal growth and empowerment. 3. The stigma attached to sex work often leads to misconceptions about the individuals involved. Many people assume that sex workers are victims or in dire situations, overlooking the autonomy and agency of those who willingly choose this path. 4. Like any industry, the sex work sector can have its dangers. However, advocating for the decriminalization and regulation of sex work can improve safety and working conditions, allowing for better health resources and legal protections. 5. It's essential to consider the communities that rely on sex work for their livelihoods. Approaches to policy and support should be inclusive, addressing the needs and rights of these individuals rather than marginalizing them further. 6. Discussions about sex work often touch on larger societal issues, including gender inequality, economic disparity, and human rights. Addressing these underlying factors can lead to more effective and compassionate solutions. Fostering open and informed dialogues about sex work with those directly involved can play a crucial role in dismantling stereotypes and enhancing our understanding of the complexities surrounding this profession. Such conversations can pave the way for policies that uphold the rights and well-being of sex workers. While it is essential to acknowledge the inherent risks within the sex industry, it is equally important to recognize that it can provide a fulfilling and viable career path for some individuals. By adopting a nuanced perspective, we can move beyond one-size-fits-all solutions and explore innovative approaches that inclusively support the communities reliant on sex work. https://lnkd.in/gSrd2yM7
