In this week I had the great opportunity to present a talk at 6G Grand Summit at KAIST. My presentation was about "FDD Massive MIMO without CSI Feedback: How to get a free lunch without cost?" The key message was that FDD massive MIMO still can use UL and DL channel reciprocity in parts. By capitalizing on this partial channel reciprocity, we showed that DL channel can be reconstructed accurately from UL pilots only. This reconstructed DL channel using UL pilots, coupled with a robust DL precoding technique known as GPIP, enables the attainment of maximum sum spectral efficiency with perfect DL channel knowledge. This is contingent on the condition that the number of antennas is significantly larger than the number of channel paths. As the number of channel paths increases, we delved into the importance of phase information in DL channel paths. We found that sending back phase information alone is sufficient to bridge the gap and approach the capacity limit. I welcome any feedback and suggestions regarding the potential and future exploration of this research direction!
