I've noticed a growing trend over the past few years—many people seem less comfortable with others having opinions that differ from their own. A recent example that highlights this is the introduction of Blind Barbie. It's a topic that has sparked a lot of discussion, and it's definitely a bit like Marmite: some people love it, and others, like myself, are not so keen. I completely understand the intention behind creating Blind Barbie—it’s about inclusivity, and that's certainly a positive step forward. However, it's not something that resonates with me personally. I realize that you can’t please everyone, and that’s okay. What concerns me is how some of those who are in favor of Blind Barbie respond to differing opinions. When someone expresses a less favorable view, they often face harsh and dismissive comments. It seems that the moment someone shares a reasoned perspective on why they don't like it, the backlash only intensifies. It's important to remember that it's okay for us all to have different opinions—we're human, after all. We advocate for being treated as individuals, yet some seem intent on boxing us all into the same corner. Let’s continue to support respectful discussions and recognize that differing opinions are not only natural but valuable. After all, it’s our diversity of thought that truly drives progress. #Inclusion #DiversityOfThought #RespectfulDiscussions #BlindnessAwareness

Representation and belonging matter in all aspects of life. Growing up, I didn't look like anyone around me. Not my family, classmates, or even my dolls. As a little girl with brown skin and frizzy pigtails, I longed to look like those around me. It may seem trivial to some, but the lack of representation impacted my self-esteem and that of many other children. Barbie was a beautiful and fabulous creation; and everyone loved her. But for me and other black children, for a very long time, there were no dolls that looked like us. In the 1930s, two psychologists found that this lack of representation had a significant impact on the self-esteem of black children. It's essential to recognize that representation matters. It can impact how we see ourselves and how we fit into the world around us. I invite you to read my story and learn more about why representation and belonging matter. Even if it's Barbie! If you'd like to talk more, or explore a talk about Barbie, feel free to DM me. #representationmatters #barbiefanatic #barbie #belongingmatters #43blackbarbies #collector

REPRESENTATION To ensure inclusivity, Mattel is launching its first blind Barbie doll. Senior vice-president of Barbie, Krista Berger, said, “We recognise that Barbie is much more than just a doll; she represents self-expression and can create a sense of belonging.” The doll, which is now available online and in-store, has been created to ensure societal representation of blind and low-vision children. Reportedly, the company worked with the American Foundation for the Blind to accurately depict people with blindness and low vision. Barbie would be carrying a white and red cane with marshmallow tips and eyes gazing slightly up and out. The packaging has also been made more accessible, including the word ‘Barbie’ written in braille on the front of the box. Apart from the first blind Barbie, Mattel also partnered with the National Down Syndrome Society - an American organisation - to launch its first black doll with Down’s syndrome. Last year, Mattel launched a white doll with Down’s syndrome.
