Drivers are keeping their vehicles for an average of 12.5 years because it is still cost-effective to maintain them. It is crucial for us to continue to have the right to service and maintain our automobiles by whom and where we choose. Automakers and legislators are challenging the auto industry by putting limits on who and where vehicles are maintained. In simple terms, automakers are trying to force car buyers to return to their dealerships only for maintenance and repairs by not sharing diagnostic tools and information with independent auto repair shops and car owners. They are standing their ground arguing that despite having access to diagnostics and parts, people can become injured by performing repairs that they are not professionally trained to do. In the most recent update, federal regulatory agencies claim that providing repair and diagnostic software is unsafe and could potentially make cars more vulnerable to computer hackers. The CARS Rule will take effect on July 30, 2024 What the CARS Rule Requires: • No Misrepresentations: The rule prohibits misrepresentations about key information, like price and cost. • Offering Price, Total Payment, and Add-Ons Optional: Dealers have to provide the offering price—the actual price any consumer can pay for the vehicle; tell consumers that optional add-ons (like extended warranties) are not required; and give information about the total payment when discussing monthly payments. • No Bogus Add-Ons: The rule prohibits dealers from charging for any add-on that does not provide a benefit to consumers. Examples of such add-ons include: warranty programs that duplicate a manufacturer’s warranty, service contracts for oil changes on an electric vehicle, GAP agreements that do not actually cover the car or neighborhood in which it is housed, or other parts of the deal, and software or audio subscription services on a vehicle that cannot support the software or subscription. • Get Consumers’ Consent: The rule requires dealers to get consumers’ express, informed consent for any charges that they pay as part of a vehicle purchase. #improvetheautobuyingprocess

CDK Global, a service provider to more than 15,000 retail locations, was targeted in two attacks on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. The attack caused CDK to shut down its systems to prevent the loss of customer data and allow for testing and other measures to restore its services. Auto dealerships are still reeling from a cyberattack on niche industry software, that supports day-to-day operations, paralyzing auto dealers. As a result, many companies are turning to “old school” strategies. For example, they’re manually taking orders and writing them up by hand. But this may also impact customers whose data could’ve been compromised in the attack, a hot-button issue that’s been top of mind lately. It’s another reminder that cutting edge technology that makes our everyday tasks easier also comes with ample risk. According to a new nationwide survey of repair shops, 84% of independent repair shops view vehicle repair and maintenance data access as the top issue for their business, surpassing other considerations like inflation as well as technician recruitment and retention. Additionally, 63% of independent repair shops surveyed said they experience difficulties making routine repairs on a daily or weekly basis, and 51% of independent repair shops reported sending as many as five vehicles per month to dealers because of vehicle data restrictions. Hanover Research conducted the survey between Feb. 1 and Feb. 14, contacting 407 people who work at independent auto repair shops. The study has a margin of error of 5%. According to the Auto Care Association, on whose behalf the survey was conducted, vehicle data limitations cost independent repair shops an estimated $3.10 billion each year. “This research sheds new light on the stark reality facing the 273,000 shops and 900,000 technicians in in the United States if Congress fails to take action on federal ‘Right to Repair’ legislation,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association. “Without change, local repair shops will be forced to turn away more and more business, leaving car owners with no choice but to foot outsized bills at the dealership. “The REPAIR Act is critically needed to protect America’s vibrant network of local, independent repair shops that offer trusted service, convenience and choice to millions of American drivers during the car repair process.” #righttorepair #aftermarket #autocare
