Tell Congress to Support the Right to Repair We continue to collaborate with the Auto Care Association to raise awareness and call for legislation to support the Right to Repair in the Automotive industry. NAPA is running an awareness campaign for the Right to REPAIR Act through August. Why does this matter to you? - Without an update to this law, trusted independent repair shops will be unable to fix their loyal customers' cars, and thus, consumers will have less choice and pay more for their car repairs. - Drivers are unwittingly generating revenue streams for car manufacturers every time they get behind the wheel. The vast amounts of data from driver behavior to GPS location could be sold to third parties, including advertisers, without consent or knowledge. Status of the Right to REPAIR ACT (H.R. 906): on 11/2/23, the H.R. 906 Repair Act was sent to the House-Energy and Commerce Committee. There has not been any action since it entered the committee. The Australian Government has just unveiled the draft legislation for the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES). Sensible and calm lobbying from the automotive retail sector and the influence of dealers has led to workable amendments to the original NVES. It is important that VADA acknowledges the work of Matthew Hobbs for his dogmatic, and pragmatic, approach in arriving at a better position for new car dealers. Key outcomes and comments for the consideration: - Certain 4WDs like Toyota Landcruiser and Nissan Patrol will be re-categorised as light commercial vehicles. - MTAA sees these concessions as a sign of the Government's awareness of global challenges in transport electrification. - Concerns exist regarding when NVES compliance should be met, with a push for point-of-sale measurement. - Government pledges $60 million to boost EV charging at Aussie dealerships via the Driving the Nation fund. - The Bill will bring various support measures for the automotive retail sector, including Franchising Code of Conduct reforms and addressing EV mechanic shortages. - A review of NVES effectiveness is slated for 2026. The MTAA will continue to work with the Federal Government on the implementation of the NVES and its operation for the five-year term of the program concluding in 2029. Absolutely agree. We the people are being bombarded by anti-American policies. Forcing the sale of vehicles that are unsuitable for the vast majority of consumers, vehicles that are handing over the power of our transportation infrastructure to the CCP, cost way too much versus the “value” provided. Automobiles replaced the horse and buggy without government subsidies. Why? They offered a distinct advantage over the mode they were replacing, period. I’m also TOTALLY against the government mandate that vehicles have a “kill switch” controllable by government that has the potential to be abused during future scenarios. Get government out of our lives, stop the tyrannical policies. From a life long participant in the automotive industry.
