Tartan Today. Tartans continue to be designed and registered with the relevant Scottish authorities, both by large corporations and by private individuals.
Clan tartan patterns have deep historical origins and cultural significance for Scottish identity. There are over 3,500 documented tartans representing different Scottish clans, families, districts and organizations. The earliest known Scottish tartans date back to the 16th century but did not become widespread until the 19th century during a Victorian tartan craze. Tartan designs reflect the geographic origins and heritage of Scottish clans. Regional associations were the original basis for pattern development before specific clan identities were codified. Color palettes often reference the natural landscape like greens for forests or blues and purys for coastal lands. Symbolic meanings may also be woven into a tartan through color choices. Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day marking the end of slavery in the United States and celebrating freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the African American community. Juneteenth commemorates that moment on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Texas to finally inform enslaved people of their freedom—news that came a casual two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. Last week, Ancestry made an exciting announcement that resonates deeply with this celebration. They have published a new collection of approximately 38,000 newspaper articles related to enslaved people in the United States, spanning from 1788 to 1867. This collection includes details on more than 183,000 formerly enslaved individuals, providing invaluable insights and helping millions of descendants discover more about their families. By shedding light on these stories that are at risk of being forgotten, they are ensuring that future generations can learn from and honor the past. On this Juneteenth, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made while recognizing the importance of understanding our history. I encourage everyone to explore this new collection and share these stories. Together, we can keep this memory and legacy alive, ensuring that their struggles and triumphs continue to inspire us all. https://lnkd.in/gqX-fBYe #Juneteenth #Ancestry #CulturalHeritage #Freedom #Resilience #HistoryMatters

New on the blog! Faith Boser, one of our Researchers this summer, writes about the influences that heritage places had on her growing up, including on her curiosity and identity. Faith says: "As we become adults, these spaces continue to have significance in our lives, connect us to our identities and communities, and build an attachment to the places around us."
