The complexity of India's evolving work culture.
Infosys’ billionaire Mr Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour work week advice has been lapped up by traditional, orthodox business owners while harshly criticized by the youth of the country especially after the tragic demise of 26 years old Anna Sebastian Perayil of EY Pune due to cardiac arrest caused by heavy workload and office stress.
A flag-bearer of healthy work-life balance and work ethics, Namita Thapar called Mr Narayana Murthy's advice a “crock of bullshit.”
She further explained, "So, I think for founders and high stakeholders, who make tons of money—go for it. Work 24 hours a day forever! But I think for the common man and woman... (there needs to be) a certain number of hours that they are supposed to work."
Thapar further stated that as her family owns 80% of the $3 billion valued entity Emcure, she can work 20 hours a day, but not her employees, who “doesn’t share the same financial upside.”
Thapar raised concerns about the physical and mental health implications of extended work hours and high stress levels particularly for salaried employees who lack the same level of financial motivation like the business owners.
Globally, the conversation around work hours has evolved to balance flexibility, productivity and employee well-being. Companies are increasingly recognizing that employees' health and satisfaction contribute to long-term success, prompting a shift toward more flexible work arrangements, mental health support and clearer boundaries between work and personal life.
However, we all know that extra ordinary success requires unwavering dedication and effort, regardless of fixed working hours. All the successful people we see today have worked extremely hard to be where they are. Young professionals should be prepared to push themselves early in their careers but also recognize the importance of creating a sustainable balance.
The conversation also reflects a larger trend in global work culture, as organizations grapple with finding the right balance between flexibility, efficiency and employee satisfaction.
