My Journey: From Brain Chemicals to Human Connection Now, in my 70th year, I become even more conscious of what leading US recovery advocate Bill White says in his book 'Recovery Rising' about leaving a personal legacy for the field, so that others, and the field as a whole, can benefit from one’s personal knowledge, understanding, and experiences. Here is a blog post linking to the first 22 chapters of my current draft. https://lnkd.in/gd8h4USV

Nonprofit Strategist | Executive Coach for Nonprofit Leadership Development | My mission is to support mission-driven organizations, develop dynamic nonprofit leaders, and advocate for workers' well-being...
Even the very best of us have a 'slump moment', in spite of our best efforts. It's important to evaluate why you feel this way and focus on doing whatever you can--fast as you can, so that a 'slump moment' won't turn into a slump day, slump week, slump month, etc. It's equally important to recognize if you are not able to pull yourself out of this slump. Quite often, some feel that there is no support, but if you don't seek or ask for support, many do not know that you need help or how they are able to help you. This is where self-advocacy is crucial. Although close friends and family may detect something is going on, no one can read your mind. You must speak up early and often, if necessary. So the next time your day is off to a rough start or you're just feeling low, ask yourself why? What can you do to course correct? If it's a serious crisis, ask yourself who can reach out to for support. Refuse to suffer in silence and keep in mind, everyone needs someone, sometimes.

Good news: Compassion can be learned! Researchers Weng et al (2013) found that compassion training can lead to increased altruistic behavior. Compassion training activates regions in our brain that help us understand the suffering of other people, executive and emotional control, and reward processing.
