Happy to share that The state government has officially approved the renaming of the school we’ve adopted in Kunegaon, Lonavala to "Della Foundation Higher Secondary ZP School." When we first took over, the school had fewer than 60 students. Now, it’s grown to over 260 children from economically weaker sections, Adivasi communities, and orphaned kids.  We’re also proud to be the *first ZP school in Maharashtra* to receive permission to offer education from 7th to 12th grade, thanks to the support of the CM! This means local village girls won’t have to stop their education after the 7th grade anymore.  In addition to managing the school with our own resources, we also provide daily breakfast and lunch to all 260 students, and have hired 6 full-time teachers on our payroll to cover all subjects, including English. We’ve also introduced various activities like swimming, mountain climbing, dance classes, and grooming sessions.  It’s a huge milestone for us, and I felt happy sharing it with you all. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LEADER (BECAUSE IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG ONE, YOU'RE SCREWED). After just 4 short years, John Donahoe has stepped down as Nike's CEO. Nike had, until recently, dominated its industry. It was the leader in innovation - and with its cut through marketing campaigns, became an icon of American success. But under Donahoe's stewardship, its profits have fallen off a cliff. Recently $28 billion dollars was wiped off its stock value. What happened? First, Donahoe is an outsider who didn't really have any knowledge or expertise in the apparel business. Second, he's a finance guy who focused on the numbers instead of the product or vision of the brand. Donahoe slashed sales teams and R&D. And shifted products from Nike’s retail partners to its own stores. He also laid off hundreds of marketers who had an intimate knowledge of Nike’s customers, intending to replace them with data driven insights. Product creation shifted from sports specific thinking to a focus on demographics. So instead of a team creating products for basketball, football or tennis lovers, he created generic products for male and females, very much like Zara, Uniqlo or H&M. The result was, in the words of former Nike branding executive Massimo Giunco, that “for the first time in Nike history, long term vision wasn’t about sustainable growth anymore…it was about the supremacy of Direct To Consumer, led by digital.” Fundamentally, Donahoe was a number cruncher. He didn't believe in brand, he didn't believe in innovation and he didn't believe in partnerships. He DID believe in cost cutting. And how many leaders have we seen with the same attitude who have also failed (Boeing comes to mind)? Donahoe has exited Nike with millions in his pocket, while Nike itself is billions out of pocket. The lesson? Choose your leaders well.
