I came across this post and article today that caught my eye: "Crystal Window & Door Systems, LTD. Welcomes New CEO Jeffrey Smith". The company name instantly brought back memories!
Back in the late 1990s, I interned and then worked at the Jamaica Business Resource Center (JBRC) in Jamaica, Queens, NY. JBRC was the first One Stop Capital Shop launched as part of President Clinton’s initiative to provide small businesses with access to financing and technical support. It was my first exposure to SCORE Mentors and the U.S. Small Business Administration, and it sparked a passion in me for entrepreneurship and small businesses that drives me to this day.
JBRC was my first real "job" and it showed me what was possible with the right mentors, guidance, education, and discipline. One of my early mentors, Gary Alexander Byrd, always reminded me of the value of education and how it would be my ticket to success and opportunities beyond my immediate surroundings and situation. He was the first to teach me about business planning, strategic thinking, and competitive analysis.
The founders of Crystal Windows & Doors probably don’t remember me. I was just a 19/20-year-old trying to figure out my future. I can't remember his name, but I assume it was either Thomas or Steve Chen mentioned in the article. He came to the resource center almost EVERY DAY, met with mentors, used our computers and business resource library, and leveraged the small business community to work on his dream. He probably didn't notice me as I was usually in the back file room sorting documents, but his dedication left a lasting impression on me. Seeing this article brought me joy and admiration, and proved to me once again that with hard work, dedication, and the right team, anything is possible.
Wow, from using a little non-profit's computers and library to founding one of the largest window manufacturers in the country with over 750 employees. If this isn’t the American dream, I don't know what is!
Congrats to Crystal Pacific Window & Door Systems and to Thomas and Steve Chen on this momentous achievement, and thank you for inspiring me at an early age without even knowing it.
Onward and upward!
