I was privileged to join the The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's distinguished speaker series as a part of their #BlackHistoryMonth gathering hosted by the Goodyear Black Network. The discussion was moderated by my former colleague and friend, senior vice president and chief communications officer, Laura Duda. Though we’re not related, it was also wonderful getting to meet and hear from RaJohn Butler. Throughout the dynamic conversation we discussed how individuals can, regardless of their roles, work to advance a more diverse and inclusive workplace. I shared that one of the simplest but most effective ways we can do to advance DEI in the workplace is to take the time to get to know our coworkers. When we welcome the opportunity to connect, not only can our outlooks change but so can our outputs. At all levels of business, having a mindset of inclusivity and being able to embrace diverse voices and perspectives is critical. Advancing the DEI work we do here at Exelon through every level of our business plays a critical role in our ability to deliver safe, reliable, and equitable energy to our communities. Although Black History Month provides a chance to delve into subjects that benefit the Black community through meaningful discussions, DEI remains significant to our business year-round. For us, it’s a core value and not just a business strategy. We need to reflect the communities that we serve, not only in our entry-level teams but at the executive-level as well. We’re clear that anyone who works for Exelon is required to demonstrate these values, and it’s my job to be a model of that behavior. That means standing up for the values we represent and staying true to them despite ever shifting climate around us. CITY OFFICIALS ARE EXECUTING DEVELOPERS AGREEMENTS BEFORE PUBLIC IS AWARE ? TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION? DISPARITY REPORT 2016 STATES. Redevelopment Authority] approved the goal over the objections of the Human Relations Department of I think 1.2 minority [participation] and 2.5 WBE [participation], when there was adequate availability of minority and women contractors to meet the City’s standard kind of goal of 15 [percent] and 7 [percent]. They’re diluting the opportunity for minority and women contractors when it comes through the statutory business development organizations, all of whom have different sets of rules..… There ought to be a uniform code that is incorporated in all the development agreements which people in our community never see.… There’s a disconnect. And I realize they’re trying to change some of that now but the insulting part of it was there was more money spent through statutory agencies last year for contracting activities than there were through City departments.… It’s obviously developer driven. By the time we see it the development agreement has already been executed. We’re having a big deal now both with the east patrol, the streetcar and the proposed 800 room convention center hotel. If it’s not in the development agreement there’s very little you can do at that point.… Kansas City’s an inclusive city. We’ve shown that over and over. It has sustained through white mayors, through black mayors, through female mayors. Yet, we allow the statutory organizations to dilute it.They have their own board[s] and they can do what they want.
