My first digital dance program review! That's right, my first.
I'll confess: I'm a little late to the game. Several years ago, due largely to the COVID-19 pandemic, dance companies across the globe started experimenting with delivering contemporaneous performances on demand. Today, what we call 'digital dance programs' are an established part of the regular season.
This phenomenon in part inspired my undergraduate research on the digital mediatization of ballet, or why, how, and to what effect the very fibers of ballet are actually transforming to meet new digital media logic (pretty cool stuff, right?). I put this idea on the back burner for some time but was reminded of it last weekend while watching Pacific Northwest Ballet's latest digital program 'The Times Are Racing'.
While the resounding question when writing my thesis was 'is a digital dance program possible?', it's safe to say we've advanced to asking the question: What makes a digital dance program good?
I'm excited to continue exploring this and other important topics in dance with The Ballet Herald®.
