This is what being a zookeeper means to me: No job is perfect. Every job has its perks. Every job has it’s ups and it’s downs. What zookeepers do is very hard both mentally and physically. 365 days a year rain or shine, we have to be here to take care of them. We don’t cuddle with them or hold them. They are not our pets nor do they act like our animals at home. The more complex and intelligent an animal is the more challenging it can be to do your job. Primates are the very definition of that. Challenging. They are intelligent. They are socially complex. They are extremely strong. They are magnificent. I am reminded of all of these things every single day. What gets me through those very hard days is the fact that I get the honor and privilege to be a zookeeper. That all the hard work paid off and I get to work with them. These pictures were taken because of the relationship that we have worked to build with them. These photos remind me of why I do what I do. These Red Ruff Lemurs are so important to their native country of Madagascar. They are one of the largest pollinators in the world. I’m very fortunate that I not only get to work with them, but that I get to help educate the public on the need and want to conserve all species big and small. This was a great way to end zookeeper week. ❤️
