Perhaps we can say that a decent measure of any government is how they truly treat their regional communities and the smallest electorates. In terms of aimless showboating, or grand and empty gestures, you wouldn't bother would you? Big expsnses for an electorate no one cares much for? In 2024 however, Darwin remains Australia's smallest capital city, with a population of 144,000. And yet. Their communities need us more than any other. In 2019, ABC journalist Ms Chelsea Heaney, in an article titled 'Darwin only capital city in the nation where population dropping' made it clear what the situation was there. And here we are in 2024 and Darwin is going to have a new medical school. Under the stewardship of the Albanese government, Australia is clearly a nation Ahead of the Curve. And when you're ahead of the curve, you are well and truly ahead of the pack. The harmless ones and very few less harmless. Moreover, what a glorious thing for the wonderful people of Darwin. I can only imagine the good fortune this will bring Darwin. Visiting regional and rural communities always reminds you how difficult medical services can be in remote regions. Given the land mass of Australia and the sprawl of our cities, it's so integral to have the right infrastructure. And then, to have the VERY MOST prestigious schools opening up in the VERY smallest capital city in Australia? We must be doing a lot right. The people of Australia are so much better off for everything you and your administration do. Great news every week. Sometimes every day. Can't ask for much more. Thank you Minister. Very sincerely.
The Territory deserves a medical school. So we’re helping to deliver one.
