Midlands airshow last weekend marked what appeared to be a significant shifting of attitudes, at least in some respects, towards the inclusion of vintage jets in UK air displays. For the first time since I can remember we had two swept-wing participants - the Saab Draken and the Folland Gnat - the former doing (what I believe was) its first full (albeit non-aerobatic) show for a supersonically-capable jet in UK skies since the fateful Hunter tragedy at Shoreham. These were joined by a third jet act, the JP3, with the trio representing a significant part of aviation history post-piston power. Well done to all involved for ensuring a safe show was enjoyed by all. However, it saddens me that the two British participants are privately funded and receive no national support to keep integral elements of UK aviation heritage airborne; with the RAF showing no support to historic jets since the sad demise of the Vintage Pair in 1986. Meanwhile, Sweden's efforts to keep elements from across its aviation spectrum alive far outshine our own non-existent jet support. I understand maintenance issues are significant (not forgetting that our own privately-owned Vampire was, through no fault of its UK team, unable to appear due to ongoing serviceability issues). Certainly, compounded with an apparently ever-increasing risk-averse culture, I doubt we will see jet types receiving the sort of government support that could enable them to keep flying safely for years to come. It's still a shame, however.

Korean Air announced that it has renewed its cabin service procedure in light of rising cases of extreme turbulence on commercial flights. Since July 1, 2024, the South Korean flag carrier has wrapped up its in-flight services 40 minutes prior to landing on all medium to long-haul flights, 20 minutes earlier than the previous service policy. Korean Air believes that the 20-minute change will allow in-flight services to end before the airplane begins its descent to land, thereby minimizing the risk of turbulence to passengers and crew members. While on leave in Seward, AK, I found this sign at the Alaska Sea Life Center profound and relevant. “Technology can be quite tempting and creates an easy trap.” During my time as the 51st Mission Support Group Commander, we attempted several times to tackle the limited parking issue on Osan Air Base. One of the problems was the inability to scan the registration sticker to confirm a vehicle is currently registered to the owner (vice passed down from unaccompanied Airman to unaccompanied Airman). A team of SMEs recommended investing in a new scanning system with a $50k+ cost and 1yr+ timeline. After much deliberation, we went back to the problem statement and I suggested we just purchase month and year stickers, like the kind placed on US state license plates. The defenders would be able to easily see if the vehicle is currently registered through an Airman’s DEROS…at 1/10th the cost and half the timeline. New tech does not always equal innovation…avoid the tech trap!

Few could argue that 1970's start-up Air Florida had not "evolved" a fairly attractive paint scheme, one that certainly suited the company's name and Miami headquarters. The blue, green, and white ensemble looked particularly good when clean and captured in good sunlight, as was the case with this ex-United Boeing 737-222 "N62AF" photographed one day late in 1980 about to return to earth at MIA. This livery made it onto the company's 727-200, 737-200, DC-9-15, and DC-10-30 aircraft but was most common on the airline's large fleet of Boeing twinjets. After beginning service with a single ex-Pan am 707-321 in 1972, Air Florida ultimately grew to fly nearly 60 aircraft. Unfortunately an at-fault fatal 1982 crash involving the subject aircraft of this photo-post in the Potomac River (immediately after departure from Washington-National), along with overexpansion, led to its demise in 1984. Notice the McDonnell Douglas Delta DC-8-61 on her gate in the lower left corner of this image. Interested in legendary Pan Am?
