Fortifying Europe’s Semiconductor Ecosystem By Victor De Decker, Patrick Grady 11 June 2024 The chip manufacturing process, though intricate, is divided into three stages: design, production, and final assembly, testing, and packaging. Over the years, companies have started to specialise in a single aspect of one of these steps, making the global chip supply chain a complex web of interdependencies and a high degree of geographic concentration. Despite significant contributions to niches within this supply chain, Europe has historically lagged behind leading regions like the US and Asia in semiconductor production. This enduring gap underscores the need for strategic initiatives like the European Chips Act to bolster Europe’s position in the global semiconductor industry.

The increasing demand for power semiconductors comes from latest developments in electrification, e-mobility, and the use of greener energy. For the upcoming generation of these power semiconductor devices, it has become increasingly important to not only integrate new materials (such as SiC and GaN), but also to use alternative manufacturing technologies. On September 14th, at ISES EU Power in Italy, Dr. Stefan Pieper, Global Application Manager for Semiconductor, will speak about electroless metallization for power semiconductors and introduce MKS' Atotech latest solution. Our semiconductor electroless products have been established in the industry for +10 years and today providing maskless metallization with higher throughput capability at a reduced Cost of Ownership compared to physical metallization techniques. Stefan will demonstrate these advantages on an example of an ENEPIG final finish that can be used as the basis for connecting the power semiconductor via wire bonding, soldering or sintering to the outside. We are excited to take part in the rise of power semiconductor devices and provide our customers and partners with the right solution.
