As the year concludes, it prompts reflection on new beginnings. As highlighted in my previous articles and LinkedIn posts, having a well-thought-out plan is crucial. This plan should encompass your 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year journey. Leaving the uniform behind is a challenging process as it is intertwined with one's identity, built over decades in many cases. This is why legendary quarterbacks, despite numerous championships, often return to the game—a physically demanding job motivated by the love of the game and tied to their identity. Transitioning to the next chapter doesn't have to mean bidding a permanent farewell to the first responder community. Much like retired football stars becoming advisors and announcers for the NFL, similar opportunities exist for first responders. Hanging up the badge doesn't have to sever ties with your network or participation in conferences like the IACP or the FBI NA, or attendance at state-level chiefs and sheriffs events. In my personal journey, I've discovered roles that allow me to interact with first responders on a daily basis. Communicating with first responders is my passion, deriving great satisfaction from helping them solve problems, ensuring the safety of staff, and protecting the communities they serve. This held true during my tenure at Microsoft, and it remains a focal point here at T-Mobile. T-Mobile is currently assembling an exceptional team of professionals dedicated to addressing the first responder market. The leadership here recognizes the importance of having current or former uniformed officers who can comprehend the nuances of emergency response. As subject matter experts, you have the insight to identify opportunities and efficiencies that T-Mobile and its partners can bring to the table. Job interviews are tricky and awkward for everyone, but for neurodiverse people, they’re an active obstacle to gaining employment. I would even say that job interviews expose the innate bias that many neurotypical people are born with against neurodiversity. Think “body language” — one of the many pieces of advice given to people before an interview is to make strong eye contact, a firm handshake, and to sit straight and still. These are all things most autistic people struggle with. One thing autistic people are told time and time again when they reveal their diagnosis is, “Oh, but it’s a superpower! Autism is a superpower!” So why not hire a superhero, then? I would love to bring together a team of neurodiverse individuals to discuss what the solution to this system is.
While in the hiring process we are looking for people who ‘can think outside of the box’ should we not be looking at our own ability to do same… loved this from Cúnla ní Bhraonáin Morris
