That's a good one, Nathan, and thanks for the food for thought. Disclaimer: I think we are personally responsible for most misconceptions because we don't properly communicate our role and how it evolves. To illustrate that, in the first couple of years, the internal misconception was that I knew everything and was there to help others. BS, I know a little and should guide others to figure out the solution themselves so they don't have to come back next time. The second misconception I had about CEOs, which I previously shared, is that the role is somehow set and stable. Another BS, the role dramatically changes every 6 to 12 months. You are constantly redesigning the company, which puts you in a position where you need to redesign yourself (and your role). That brings us back to the disclaimer - we need to communicate how our role, priorities, and even daily operations change so people know what is an idea or problem to discuss with you and what is already covered by someone else, an internal guide, or a process. Over to Andy ;)
"How much do you charge for designing X number of app screens?" 😒 If only people knew the amount of research and thought process behind coming up with tangible output.👀

That you just need to switch the acquisition channel of choice on and customers will magically appear.
That it's all performance ads and growth hacks
that its all just short term tactics

7moAs an agency founder, I think the biggest misconception people have is that I get to sit back and swan around whilst everyone else does all the work. Not true! Really the job is about juggling two things. Fighting fires (solving the biggest problems at any given time, whether internal or for clients). And creating opportunities (where do we focus to maximise growth). That keeps me pretty busy! I'd love to hear from two people in particular: Andy Carvell and Peter Fodor 🔜 GDC who both have more agency founder experience than me.
