Welcome to Episode 3 of Stories Behind the Smiles, where you get the inside scoop on real people's real estate adventures, the highs, the lows you get. All so often we see the just close photographs of strangers and our friends, and we just assume that they had it easy getting into their home and we've become jealous and we become discouraged. So The Stories Behind the Smile is a project to bring authentic journeys of home ownership to you. And this is a very special story. It will likely be one of my favorite stories for all time, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way as you'll be able to relate to this amazing couple. This story is so good that I had to split up into two parts for most social media platforms, but you can see the whole thing at once on my YouTube channel. So let's get to it. This is the adventure of Dana, Ben, and their daughter Oakley. I first spoke with Dana on January 25th, 2024. And in her own words, she didn't believe we could get her family into a house. She saw me as nothing more than a time wasting infomercial, but the home of they've been renting had become, in their opinion, unlivable. So they decide to give the infomercial a chance, and on January 26 we met and discussed the home buying journey. But Ben didn't join us. Then we tried to get Dana pre approved with a lender and that meeting didn't go so well. I told Dana that a good relationship with a lender is very important so she contacted another recommendation from me, TJ over EM loans. Shout out to TJ and soon you'll see why TJ was absolutely vital in getting this house. But I digress for now. So we met TJ in person on January 31st. TJ laid out a simple plan for her family to follow. To get Pre approved in a couple months. The plan wasn't easy and it would take a lot of sweat and time. But now Dana had a solid strategy to become a homeowner, even with today's market, and she worked her tail off at work. She picked up extra shifts, a lot of overtime. She got herself in a position where she could buy a home with only her on the loan. Now you know with the day's house prices, how incredibly difficult it is to get such a loan by yourself without a cosigner, But Dana and Ben did it. Like I said, this is a story of Dana, Ben and their daughter. So I asked them all to meet me on February 6th, 2024 and at this point Dana is pretty much guaranteed to get pre approved for a mortgage loan all by herself. But they're A-Team and I want us to find their home as a team. Ben is a very humble person, a gentle giant. We met at my office and started talking about the successful home buying strategy and this guy got up in the middle of my presentation. He looked at me and said good things like this don't happen to us. I'm sorry. And he walked out. Data stayed behind and told me why Ben said that. Long story short, Ben had made incredible sacrifices to provide for his family, from working long days to help Dana get through her nursing program to leaving his career to become a stay at home dad, and of course many trials and tribulations in between. Now I was in law enforcement for 11 years, My wife's a nurse. I remember when my wife looked at me and said I can't do this anymore. And I remember when we were looking at me changing careers and it made more mathematical. Sense for me to be a stay at home dad because she's a nurse. She has almost unlimited income potential. But I didn't have the stuff it takes to make that kind of sacrifice. Ben did. He sacrificed his personal dreams because his dreams for his family were more important. My teammates here at the Angry Brothers Realty team saw Ben suddenly leave and they asked me what happened. I said as Ben and Dana drove away. I just met a man who has sacrificed so much that he refuses to get his hopes up. Game on. I'm going to find that family house. And you know what? The fight wasn't over over the course of several months. This family. There's more trials outside the home hunt, but they kept going. They had a dream for their daughter and they were not going to let that dream go.
