Thank you to UK Research and Innovation for the opportunity to speak about the various career transitions I have taken to get to the role that I currently hold in helping to grow the NE tech ecosystem; a role that has me pulling on knowledge and experiences from the diverse switches I have had the opportunity to make! Talking about your life and career choices is uncomfortable at the best of times, and on film even more so, but seeing my little girl's face at seeing 'mama on TV' makes it all the worth it. Also it's really exciting to show people a small snapshot of what the amazing facilities and work we are doing to build the tech ecosystem in the North East! A few things I've learned from my career so far that didn't make the cut: 💡 You never know where your next career move/ project/ idea will come from. Talk to people, listen to stories, be curious... Not only is it fun, but you never know what 'next big thing' might pop up next by connecting the various dots you build. 💡 People make changes in their career for all sorts of reasons, and it usually involves a combination of factors such as family, opportunity, hard work, and sometimes just being in the right place at the right time! 💡 Empathy is key. Spending time with a colleague or a team member to understand who they are, what drives them, and what is challenging for them and then finding ways to support them (formal or informal) is more valuable that anyone can realise. 💡 Always serve your argument with your front foot, and that it's incredibly important to be intellectually generous - collaboration is the only way we are going to solve those grand challenges! 

"What do I need to do to make my professional dreams into a reality?" At Grad Student Academy, we get this question a lot from PhD students. To provide some guidance, we created a framework comprised of 5 key factors. The five factors are: ✅ Knowledge: What you know ✅ Skills: What you can do ✅ Network: Who you know ✅ Resources: What you have ✅ Reputation: What the world thinks of you ❓ So where to start? It can be intimidating to think that you have to develop all five factors, but the good news is that they don't have to be developed simultaneously. 💡 Start simple, focus on investing in your knowledge and skills. As you expand your expertise and ability to apply it (i.e., develop your skills), you will create value in helping other people solve their problems. By becoming valuable to others, you will grow your network, increase your resources, and develop a positive reputation. ⚡ As you increase these five factors, you will be able to increasingly live out your professional dreams. My agenda is as follows: - Bridge the gap between graduate students and the administration by actively addressing your needs and ensuring your voices are heard. - Foster a robust professional development environment through diverse workshops, seminars, and networking events tailored to your career aspirations, empowering you with the skills and knowledge to thrive in industry positions, research roles, or entrepreneurial ventures. - Implement transparent and accessible communication channels for regular feedback, ensuring your concerns are addressed promptly and effectively. - Streamline the process for on-campus job opportunities, making it more transparent and accessible for all graduate students. - Facilitate cross-knowledge events in collaboration with other NYU schools and organizations, broadening your exposure and enhancing the breadth of your knowledge. - Create an inclusive community that celebrates diversity, with events, professional networking opportunities, and social outings that bring together students from all walks of life, fostering connections, collaborations, and lasting bonds. Together, we can shape an NYU graduate experience that empowers you, enriches your academic journey, and prepares you for the challenges that lie ahead. Hot off the press! 📰 An effective means to teaching essential skills: CEE’s WE Accelerate Program Waterloo Experience (WE) Accelerate offers an innovative work term option for students entering their first work term. As part of HEQCO’s Skills Consortium, WxL researchers sought to evaluate the WE Accelerate program, specifically examining whether participation in WE Accelerate reverses un(der)employment and helps students to develop in-demand transferable skills. Researchers’ findings revealed that participation in WE Accelerate was associated with: • development of teamwork and critical thinking skills; • students finding a work position earlier for subsequent co-op work terms; • students obtaining a higher pay rate compared to their faculty average in subsequent work terms. Who remembers their middle school science fairs? We bet you can still recall in great detail some of your hypotheses, experiments, and conclusions. You might even have one of your tri-fold boards tucked away in the basement somewhere. But more importantly, you probably learned the scientific method. Identifying a problem, doing some research to come up with a hypothesis, designing and running an experiment to test that hypothesis, and then coming up with conclusions based on your observations. Well when students consider a career, we need to help them replicate this scientific method. #Highered has traditionally done a pretty decent job supporting all of these steps except experimentation. Enter experiential learning (EL). Institutions that support and scale these opportunities — and not just leave them to chance — are helping students prototype their future careers so they can draw conclusions on if it's really for them.
