My former colleague, Geoff Hinton, has just won the Nobel Prize in physics. Massive congratulations! Without his contributions to neural networks, so much of what we've achieved with AI today would not be possible. The next frontier is ensuring that we use the technology we build to amplify the best of us and not the worst of us. Part of the solution is technological - safety nets, guardrails, and progress in AI reliability. But even more important is skilled leadership to guide how we apply AI, not only in terms of how we build it but also in how we use it when that use scales to affect our fellow humans. This takes a new breed of responsible and skilled leader who's ready to exemplify the best of human judgment and creativity. After all, when we enlarge ourselves with technology, we make it easier to step on the people around us. We'll need leaders who are able to direct their steps with wisdom and care in this brave new automated world. The potential for runaway technology may be a problem, but the solution starts with recognizing that technology on its own will never be enough. We need to start honing complimentary human skills to navigate the future responsibly. These aren't skills they teach at school. But they're the skills we need most. While I'm generally more optimistic about the future of technology than Geoff is, I agree that human negligence at scale is one of the greatest threats we face. But it's just one more challenge for us to overcome and I think we're up to it. I intend to do my part to help make sure of that.

A new study looks at how donors feel about A.I. in giving. The results, authors Cherian Koshy and Nathan Chappell say, suggest nonprofits should take a pause and reassess whether their use of the technology could be negatively impacting donor trust. "Donor Perceptions of A.I.: Implications on the Future of Charitable Giving" surveyed 1,006 donors in the U.S. about their familiarity with the technology and whether its use would affect their willingness to donate. Thirty one percent of respondents said they would be less likely to donate to charities that used A.I., 34 percent of respondents said it would not affect their donations either way and just 9 percent said they would be more likely to donate.
