Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, in the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C., and he died on April 15, 1865. He was America’s 16th and arguably its greatest president thus far. He was the first person elected from the Republican Party as president of these United States in the presidential election of November 6, 1860. The Republican Party had been founded six years earlier in 1854 by antislavery democrats after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Lincoln served as president during the American Civil War between the slavery-supporting Confederate States and antislavery Union (1861-1865). He signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, and it became effective on January 1, 1863. His Emancipation Proclamation became the underpinning for the three immediate post-civil war amendments to the U.S. Constitution — the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments — which began the process of granting equal rights to all Americans. He was not a perfect man at all, but he did some great things for the United States. Lincoln is one of the eight U.S. presidents who’ve died in office: four died by assassinations, and four from natural causes. Abraham Lincoln, JFK, MLK, and many other great Americans were killed just because they wanted America to be true to what it said in its Declaration of Independence and Constitution— equality for all — but a certain group of Americans didn’t want that. Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the U.S. As it was in June 19, 1865, when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas ended of the American Civil War. Although this date commemorates enslaved people learning of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation, this only applied to former Confederate states. There remained legally enslaved people in states that never seceded from the Union. These people did not gain their freedom until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6, 1865. Today we remind all that the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1865, which abolished slavery throughout the U.S. and ended involuntary servitude EXCEPT as a punishment for conviction of a crime. Slavery has been perpetuated since the end of the American Civil War through criminalizing behavior and enabling police to arrest poor freedmen and force them to work for the state under convict leasing; suppression of African Americans by disenfranchisement, lynchings, and Jim Crow; politicians declaring a war on drugs that weighs more heavily on minority communities and, by the late 20th century, mass incarceration affecting communities of color, especially American descendants of slavery, in the U.S. The question remains what is Juneteenth to an incarcerated Black person? ... please share and repost! #Recovery #Reentry #Juneteenth

The divide in America today is perhaps deeper than it was in the 30s and 40s, the period covered in Prequel, but millions of people were just as fervent about following a totalitarian leader. It is curiously similar to today’s “radicals” and the stakes are just as high. There is a clear choice: moderate liberalism versus rampant demagoguery. What can a designer do? Campaign, advocate, support and vote. Cast ballots for freedom, liberty and American principles. Designing a poster is a nice gesture to show solidarity but is not going to defeat democrafascism. 8: On April 3, 1865, the capital of the Confederate States (the rebel states) during the American Civil War, Richmond, surrendered to Union forces (U.S. troops) after the president of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, and most of his cabinet escaped from Richmond on April 2, 1865. Richmond is now the capital of the U.S. state of Virginia. The American Civil War was fought from 1861-1865. It was fought between eleven states in the Southern part of the U.S. that wanted to maintain slavery in the U.S. (Confederate States) and the rest of the U.S. (the Union) that was opposed to the furtherance of slavery in the United States. The Confederate States lost the civil war. 9: On April 3, 1944, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in an 8–1 decision that black Americans could not be denied from voting in the Texas Democratic primaries. The Court stated that discrimination against blacks violates the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, that political parties are not private associations, and so they cannot discriminate against people based on race, religion, etc. The case was called Smith v. The recent comments made by Nikki Haley, a prominent GOP presidential candidate, regarding the cause of the Civil War, are deeply concerning. At a New Hampshire town hall, when asked about the cause of the Civil War, Haley's omission of slavery from her answer is not just a historical oversight; it's a dangerous misrepresentation of one of the most critical chapters in American history. Her response, focusing on "the role of government" and individual freedoms, while failing to acknowledge slavery as the primary cause, reflects a troubling trend to rewrite or oversimplify our nation's past. It's essential to confront the uncomfortable truths of our history, especially when it comes to the Civil War. To suggest that the war was merely about governmental roles and individual freedoms without acknowledging slavery's central role is to deny the historical reality of the systemic oppression and suffering that slavery entailed. This isn't just about political correctness; it's about historical accuracy and the recognition of the suffering and injustices endured by millions of enslaved individuals. As someone deeply committed to justice, equality, and truth, it's imperative to acknowledge the real causes of historical events, no matter how unpleasant they may be. The Civil War was fundamentally about slavery – a system that dehumanized and exploited people based on their race. To omit slavery from the conversation is to erase the experiences of those who suffered under its brutal regime and to ignore the lasting impact it has had on American society. Nikki Haley's response is particularly disheartening given her position as a former governor of South Carolina, a state deeply entwined with the history of the Civil War and slavery. Her leadership role in the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Capitol showed an understanding of the flag's representation of racial injustice and division. However, her recent comments seem to contradict that awareness. It's crucial for leaders and public figures to use their platforms responsibly, especially when discussing our nation's history. Misrepresenting or oversimplifying the causes of the Civil War does a disservice to the truth and hinders our ability to learn from the past. As we continue to strive for a more just and equitable society, acknowledging and understanding the full scope of our history, including the painful parts, is essential. The DNC chair Jaime Harrison's response, stating that "condemning slavery is the baseline for anyone who wants to be president of the United States," captures the sentiment perfectly. As a nation, we must demand accountability and historical accuracy from our leaders, ensuring that they recognize and condemn the atrocities of the past, such as slavery, to prevent them from being repeated in the future. https://lnkd.in/eeMbffK3

⚪️ people, PSA: We are not in the position nor have a right to criticize Muslims who refuse to vote for Harris. We are not in the position nor have the right to criticize Indigenous people who do not trust a damn thing the US federal government does. We are not in a position nor have the right to criticize Black people for how they choose to fight for their own liberation. We are not in a position nor have the right to criticize Latino(a,e) people whose homelands were destabilized purposefully by the US when they get anxious about voting for anything that looks like communism. Keep your efforts on us. You know how we function. Work your strengths, stop harassing and harming other racialized people with your words.

The Founders Fundamental Principles The relative uniformity of fundamental thought shared by these men included strong and unusually well-defined convictions concerning religious principles, political precepts, economic fundamentals, and long-range social goals. On particulars, of course, they quarreled, but when discussing fundamental precepts and ultimate objectives they seemed practically unanimous. They even had strong criticism of one another as individual personalities, yet admired each other as laborers in the common cause. John Adams, for example, felt a strong personality conflict between himself and Benjamin Franklin and even Thomas Jefferson. Yet Adams' writings are steeped in accolades for both of them, and their writings carried the same for him. One of George Washington's most vehement critics was Dr. Benjamin Rush, and yet that Pennsylvania physician boldly supported everything for which Washington worked and fought. We will now proceed to carefully examine the 28 major principles on which the American Founders established the first free people in modern times. These are great ideas which provided the intellectual, political, and economic climate for the formation of the greatest government ever...Our Republic. Few of life’s pleasures compare with that of confessing someone else’s sins—and that’s a pleasure at which we Americans, across the political spectrum, are woefully proficient. Partisans on each side are quick to denounce the evils of the other while ignoring or excusing their own. But evidence suggests that perceptions of the other side are as erroneous as they are poisonous. “Every movement contains a range of viewpoints, from moderate to extreme,” Victoria Parker writes in The Atlantic. “Unfortunately, Americans on each side of the political spectrum believe—incorrectly—that hard-liners dominate the opposite camp.” Parker gives multiple examples of how quick we are to (mistakenly) divide the “opposite side” of the political spectrum from ourselves: https://lnkd.in/dQxzhKRZ It’s precisely what President Washington warned against in his magisterial farewell address: "One of the expedients of party to acquire influence within particular districts is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts. You cannot shield yourselves too much against the jealousies and heartburnings which spring from these misrepresentations; they tend to render alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal affection. [. . .]" In these times of division and discord, polarization and partisanship, Founding Forward focuses on what unites us as Americans: our founding ideals, as articulated in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and as pursued, however imperfectly, from the Revolution through the present day. We educate students and teachers about the rights and corresponding responsibilities of American citizenship, including the civility and mutual respect that must characterize fellow citizens in a free Republic.

I read all of the different posts on here for different reasons. Self education mostly. I am most generally shocked by the political narratives revolving around politics. A simple truth, the Republican party formed to fight against slavery. The Democrats fought tooth and nail to keep slavery. They have since then created programs seemingly designed to keep minorities under the control of the government. I guess I am at a loss for how minorities in any way can support Democrats and thier policies. Joe Biden has many times said things that were derogatory toward minorties on the flip side Trump has done many things to support minorities. Still the entire population chooses to accept that Republicans are racist and blah blah blah because that's what we are told to think. I am registered Independant although I admittedly lean right I am not advocating a political choice, I am only questioning the narrative. While they tell us we are divided, while we accept their narrative we will stay so.
