In the inaugural issue of The Journal of Finance and Space, Sage Ponder, Sandy Wong & I discuss how to curtail PE’s extractive practices & grow investments in the real economy of healthcare in order to achieve more equitable results in the economy and our health Key points: *More attention needs to be paid to the impact of PE investments in the healthcare sector as they scale rapidly; *PE is turbo-charging financial extraction from key service sectors like healthcare; *Left unchecked, we expect PE acquisitions in healthcare to exacerbate costs & worsen health outcomes by depriving these essential services of much of the capital needed to serve their main function: to provide healthcare; *Healthcare investments could be stabilized and re-localized (with knock-on benefits to local economies and upstream determinants of health) by curbing PE’s role in the sector & expanding investments into the public provision of care; *Financial geographers can help further explain and understand the impact of private market activities on healthcare by engaging more intentionally with this issue of importance to all communities.
