Over the past year, the non-profit sector has faced significant challenges in accessing funding for employment and skills training. With youth employment rates declining and an oversubscription to funding programs, vital services are at risk. As we approach the 2025 Election cycle, NACY is advocating for permanent and secure funding to support youth employment, including expanding the Canada Summer Jobs program. I’m a big proponent of hiring Board members 30 and under. Not only will it bring new ideas and perspectives but it will also make a significant impact in the career opportunities and trajectory of a young person building their not for profit career. I really feel (from experience!) that this is one of the key ways that the not for profit sector can create a path for a much more diverse next generation of leaders.
In Canada, nonprofit boards still have a long way to go to represent the communities that they serve. Only 9.8% of all board of director positions are held by members of racialized groups. In environmental organizations, it's just 4.3%, and in the development and housing sector, just 5.7%. From designing more equitable hiring processes, to connecting your opportunities to our network of sector professionals, E&W offers wrap-around services that aim to reduce the barriers to traditional board recruitment.
