On June 15, Aquarium staff joined the Pride Parade lineup in Baltimore City to celebrate our community and staff. Staff passed out holographic stickers, blew bubbles, and were touched by the incredible support of the crowd and other parade members. 🏳️🌈 The LGBTQIA+ community has made critical contributions in conservation, research and marine science at the Aquarium and beyond. We are proud to work with and support this community and to welcome all people through our doors, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. World Braille Day on January 4 is celebrated to honor the birth of Braille’s inventor, Louis Braille. Braille’s gift to the world has brightened the lives of millions of people around the world who are blind or visually impaired, and they benefit from his work every day. The day also acknowledges that those with visual impairments deserve the same standard of human rights as everyone else. Background Eye conditions are remarkably common. The World Health Organization estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The Convention considers Braille essential for education, freedom of expression and opinion, access to information and social inclusion. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, further pledges that no one will be left behind in the aim to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives. One way WE can facilitate inclusion is by collecting SOGI (sexual orientation/gender identity) data in biomedical research (not exhaustive). Let's demonstrate seeing everyone by counting everyone. How we count determines who we count and who we count, determines who counts. Who counts determines everything!
During Pride Month, we celebrate the courage and resilience of the LGBTQI+ community and stand beside them in the fight against hatred and bigotry. Today and every day, HHS remains deeply committed to protecting the rights of LGBTQI+ Americans.
