How many times per day are people riding bikes in station-based bike share systems like BIXI-Montréal and Citi Bike? To get an idea, we measured trips taken per available bike per day in bike share systems. Our 2023 Shared Micromobility in the U.S. and Canada report found that Bixi in Montréal, Bike Share Toronto, and Citi Bike in NYC were the busiest bike share systems in North America, with each bike in the systems taken out an average of 6 to 8 times per day. E-bikes were used significantly more than pedal bikes in systems that offer both. Despite seeing more trips per bike per day, e-bikes should not replace all pedal bikes in systems. Ridership remains robust for both options; in hilly Montréal, pedal bike use outpaced e-bike use in nearly every North American system. And with no e-bikes in the system in 2023, the Boston area’s Bluebikes system served more trips per bike per day than almost every other station-based system–even with their e-bikes.

Upcoming Online AITPM - Leadership in Traffic and Transport Event | Life Cycles: New (and old) bicycle technologies as part of our human transport system webinar on Wednesday, 14 Feb 2024. This interactive webinar session will begin with an in-depth look at the “Napper typology”, a nuanced approach to understand bicycle usage beyond the conventional commuting/recreation activities. By accommodating a wide range of trip types, this typology offers a framework that contribute to better road user experiences. Next, delve into the realm of electric bicycles (e-bikes), hailed as a solution to replace motorized transport but also posing safety concerns due to an increase in crashes for higher speeds. Insights from a cross-country survey conducted in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands will explore user acceptance of smart e-bikes with active road safety assistance. The study will reveal psychological factors that influences motivation to use smart e-bikes for enhanced safety, by applying “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology”. The final presentation will focus on Australia, where cycling rates are low with greater gender disparities. Despite a significant interest among women in Australia (77% in Victoria), limitations to cycling often arise from built and sociocultural environments, which is tailored predominantly to men's mobility needs and safety perceptions. The presentation will explore the potential role of e-bikes in breaking these barriers and promoting inclusivity in biking.

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #snsdesignthinkers Electric bikes, often referred to as e-bikes, are bicycles equipped with an integrated electric motor to assist propulsion. These bikes come in various types, including mountain bikes, road bikes, city bikes, and folding bikes, among others. The electric motor provides varying levels of assistance, either through pedal-assist or throttle control. Pedal-assist e-bikes sense when the rider is pedaling and offer assistance accordingly, making pedaling easier and more efficient. Throttle-controlled e-bikes, on the other hand, operate with a handlebar-mounted throttle, similar to a motorcycle, allowing riders to control the speed without pedaling. Most e-bikes have rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power the motor. These batteries can typically cover distances ranging from 20 to over 100 miles on a single charge, depending on factors like motor power, terrain, and rider input. E-bikes provide numerous benefits, such as: Increased Range: E-bikes enable riders to cover longer distances without getting fatigued, making commuting more accessible and extending the range of recreational rides. Eco-Friendly: They offer a greener mode of transportation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to lower emissions. Fitness and Accessibility: E-bikes encourage more people to cycle by reducing the physical effort required, making cycling accessible to individuals who may not otherwise engage in traditional biking. Versatility: E-bikes can accommodate various terrains and purposes, from urban commuting to off-road adventures. When considering an e-bike, factors to weigh include battery range, motor power, bike style, durability, and comfort. Regulations regarding e-bikes vary by region, so it's essential to be aware of local laws and regulations governing their use on roads and trails. Is there anything specific you'd like to know more about regarding e-bikes
