National Association of Social Workers’ Post

Conservative media pundit Ann Coulter reportedly deleted this offensive social media post about Gus Walz, the son of vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota. Gus Walz lives with a learning disorder. NASW CEO Anthony Estreet, who is attending the DNC convention along with #SocialWorkers from around the country said, "At a time when Gus should be excited and proud of his Dad, she uses this moment to ridicule him. NASW stands firmly in our beliefs of inclusivity and diversity for all families. People who are impacted by learning disabilities deserve to experience joy and happiness."

That was a heartwarming moment and had me in tears. Anyone that thinks it’s weird probably hasn’t been proud of a family member.

All fathers should be so blessed to have their child show this display of love and admiration for them. Regardless of your political views, he must be a hell of a dad and human being!

One side seems to stand for joylessness now. I have seen people crying at graduations and the Olympics... When anyone in your family is honored for something amazing and they talk about how they love you it is pure joy. This is about Love and respect... Weather he has special needs or not, it's a beautiful moment of father and son loving each other and living in the moment. Hell, the former Speaker of the house Boner cried for the Flag... I would rather a kid love his dad so much that he cries out of happiness at his dads success than an old dude crying at the flag like Boner did during a press conference. Joy is Joy... Love is Love... Hate is Hate and the hate has to beat all of the joy and love out of your life... Loved this moment and Teared up myself... Love is Joy!

People who ridicule others for showing emotions or worse, their weaknesses or disabilities are not fit to have a platform. This behavior whether in politics or business detracts from important issues and cultivates toxicity and intolerance.

Please forgive me for taking her inventory…Coulter must really dislike herself and want/need attention, if she has to stoop this low…sadly, “they” say any press is good press…I’d rather focus on the “in the moment” love and excitement this amazing young man shared with the world regarding how he feels about his Father.

Thanks for taking this stand NASW!

This is why you cannot be an ethical social worker and support Donald Trump.

It’s so weird for someone to criticize a 17 year old for expressing love and affection for his dad. This was a beautiful moment that should be celebrated.

It’s unfortunate that some folks resort to labeling (ridicule / calling names) without knowing the other person. American society has a tendency to judge others artificially… which is sad.

I love Gus, that was the highlight of the evening for me. A child love for his parent ❤️How disrespectful of her. I hope this is reported on the news.
