A recent Gallup and Lumina Foundation survey reveals compelling statistics about adult learners and higher education. While 𝟓𝟏% of adults without a college degree are considering pursuing a credential in the near future—the highest rate since the survey began in 2020—the path to enrollment is fraught with barriers. The survey, involving over 𝟏𝟒,𝟎𝟎𝟎 adults aged 18 to 59, shows that 𝟖𝟒% are motivated by job-related reasons to consider higher education. Yet, an overwhelming 𝟖𝟓% cited the cost of higher ed as a significant barrier, with technical issues and delays in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process exacerbating the challenge. Furthermore, 𝟓𝟑% highlighted the importance of financial aid and scholarships in their decision to enroll or continue their education. John King Jr., Chancellor of The State University of New York system, articulates the broader sentiment: "People want to know that their postsecondary experience is going to translate into economic benefit." As we approach the demographic enrollment cliff, it's crucial to expand our focus. Our white paper, "𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐟,," discusses strategic shifts towards engaging non-traditional students—key to sustaining enrollment numbers. 📄 Dive into our white paper here to explore innovative strategies for tapping into this vital student demographic. https://lnkd.in/ejkAvrA9 #HigherEducation #AdultLearning #EnrollmentManagement #EduData #NonTraditionalStudents #StudentSuccess #CollegeEnrollment #EducationReform #LifelongLearning #EdTech

In recent years, a national conversation in the United States about the value of higher education has intensified, with growing and legitimate concerns over whether institutions are providing sufficient value or return on investment. Critics point to a misalignment between the curriculum offered and the evolving demands of the job market, alongside soaring tuition fees that seem to have no ceiling. Compounding this issue, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has revealed that only about 41% of students graduate with a four-year degree within four years, highlighting a stark inefficiency within the system. https://lnkd.in/gNTeqFju #unitedstates #highereducation #conversation #value #education #concerns #returnoninvestment #misalignment #curriculum #evolving #demands #jobmarket #soaring #tuitionfees

THIS IS WHY YOU NEED JELF! According to data from U.S. News & World Report, the average tuition and fees for the 2023-2024 school year are $42,162 at private colleges, $23,630 for out-of-state students at public universities, and $10,662 for in-state students at public schools. Moreover, the total cost increases significantly when including other expenses. CNN reported that Harvard University charges nearly $60,000 annually in tuition and fees for undergraduate students. With additional expenses such as housing, food, and books, Harvard's estimated annual cost reaches $95,438. U.S. News also highlighted that private schools often offset high sticker prices through tuition discounts and financial aid. For instance, Princeton University’s tuition and fees for the 2022-2023 school year were $57,410, but the average cost for students receiving need-based grants was only $17,464. Newly released Lumina Foundation and Gallup report - State of #HigherEducation 2024 is worth a good read. Findings from 14,000 US adult learners (18-59) who do not have a college degree: #Credentials are valuable, including non-credit, short-term, alternative; career outcomes are absolutely critical; affordability is top of mind; stopping out is a consideration; concerns about disrespect and discrimination. AND: Americans still see higher education — and particularly a four-year degree — as the most reliable path to a good career.

Confidence in higher education has decreased more since 2015 than any other U.S. institution, according to Gallup research. In a TIAA Institute report, Nicholas Longo of Providence College outlines ways colleges and universities can reverse perception declines and enhance institutional wellbeing by developing social, economic, and cultural ties with their local communities. This is a stunning report. COLLEGE DEGREES MATTER. The increases in college attainment between 2010 and 2020 will add $14.6 TRILLION to the economy in the coming years. If we could eliminate the gaps in attainment between whites and other groups it would add about another $18 TRILLION. And that in addition to all the benefits of a more educated population to deomocracy, health, and community engagement. The biggest gaps are at the bachelors degree and above levels which provide the greatest increases in earnings. So let’s stop the anti-college rhetoric that most damages those who would most benefit from it.

2moI wonder if this report will make any difference by spurring institutions, etc., to reduce the cost barrier? It’s not as though we don’t already know this…..
