Why will ‘challenge’ matter in 2024? In our senior maritime executive report, the top reason for senior executives to either job seek or stay loyal was the same. They either needed a new challenge in a new job, or their role still challenged them enough to make them stay. We are in a time where many of us are looking for our job to provide continuous learning opportunities. If your job no longer challenges you, your intrinsic motivations (why you get up in the morning) might be depleting. Extrinsic motivations such as reward, title, and power can only hold up for so long. Challenges in our jobs often present opportunities for senior executives to learn, adapt, and grow in their roles. Overcoming challenges often requires the acquisition of new skills, knowledge, and experiences. Creativity and innovation can be boosted too. We must explore new ways of doing things and come up with solutions that will benefit business success. We can become more motivated with a better sense of purpose and drive as we continue to learn from mistakes, stay resilient, and achieve success. 🤷Humera Ma'am, A big problem, said the team. 🤷♀️I asked, what happened? 🧏And the team said, 2 clients and only one team today. Which client should we send the team. 🧏♀️I said, to X client. 🧏And the team asked, why not the other one? 🧏♀️I said, this client's vessel is only for 3 days, and it was scheduled and informed a week before. 🧏What about the other client? asked the team. 🧏♀️I said, call the officer and inform them, team will come tomorrow. There vessel is there for some days. 👉The on board team reached and there was no vessel. Waited for sometime and called, 🧏Humera Ma'am there's no vessel. We waited nearly 1 hour. 🧏♀️I said, Let me call the officer, i called twice, messaged and there was no reply. And the team was asked to go to another client. 🧑🍼Within 15 minutes, the Senior officer called, and asked about the team. 🧏♀️I said, team left, as there was no answer from your end. 🧑🍼Officer asked to get the team back, and the arrangements were done for the other client and the project leaders did not agree. Officer said, Humera, you are the owner, you can do it. For a second, the thought came, owner again? 🤷♀️I said, let me see. I called the teamleader and there was no response. I called the officer and said, there's no response. 🧑🍼In few minutes, the officer once again called and said, we have your team leader in conference, and I said to the teamleader, please go as you had scheduled for this client only. 🧏Teamleader asked, what about project leaders? 🧏♀️I said, You people enjoy troubling officers. I will handle. 💁♂️And the team said, one call from Senior officers, and Humera Ma'am, will ask the entire universe to work for them. #shipbuilding #shiprepair #marine #marineindustry

WHO WOULD YOU ASK? “Hello Doctor, yes, I do have a dry cough and a suspiciously itchy rash but I’d also like to find a new Head of Operations to run our fleet”, are the words no-one has ever heard. Which is why we founded Stonefort Marine Talent. To provide a deeply practical, effective alternative for both clients & candidates: maritime executive search & leadership capability building grounded in a deep, genuine understanding of maritime people & businesses. Between us, we have a broad mix of maritime backgrounds: roots in commercial shipping (deck & engineering) & the military as well as senior leadership experience ashore (crewing, vetting, commercial, strategy, technical & fleet operations) and in maritime best practice organisations. Which means, when someone says, “I’d like to find a new Head of Operations to run our fleet”, we know exactly the right questions to ask, both of the client and prospective candidates. When someone says, “Can you help train our senior leadership?”, we know exactly how to break down the born-from-the-sea cynicism that might accompany another corporately-mandated training programme. And, if a client is struggling to bring talent from sea to shore, we know exactly where the critical weak points & fractures in the pipeline might be. So, while we’re happy to leave coughs & rashes to the doctors, if you’re after expert maritime advice about maritime people then give us a call or drop us an email: mark.fortnum@stonefortmarine-talent.com or mark.hanson@stonefortmarine-talent.com. Non-executive director| Managing Partner at stonefort marine talent & stonefort marine consultancy | Ex-BP | Ex-SIGTTO | Ex-OCIMF |
Further to our article below, and to give a sense of what it’s like to work with us, I wanted to share some feedback from last week. We were interviewing an experienced maritime leader for a senior port role. His closing comment went something like this, "Thank you, it was great talking. It's so refreshing to speak to a recruiting company with a deep understanding of both the role and of me as a candidate, of what I can bring. I get your model and USP (maritime leaders recruiting for maritime leadership roles)." Kind words but, hopefully, words that bring to life the stonefort difference.
