The SHSU Institute for Homeland Security hosts technical paper series on our website, ihsonline.org. The non-partisan series features papers with various viewpoints and examines critical and timely issues facing homeland security. In today’s “Research Spotlight,” we’re featuring Michael S. Vaughn's paper “Ransomware: A Contemporary Security Threat." Ransomware specifically poses direct threats to the transportation, healthcare, energy and chemical sectors of society. This paper addresses ransomware from a legal perspective, identifying federal laws that have been enacted to combat ransomware. The paper also assesses how ransomware has impacted the transportation, health care, energy and chemical sectors in Texas. The paper concludes by recommending that the State of Texas create an agency to report cyber threats in general and ransomware specifically. Vaughn, M. S. (2022). Ransomware: A Contemporary Security Threat. (Report No. IHS/CR[1]2022-2045). We could not agree more with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray’s emphasis on the importance of global partnerships at the Munich Security Conference. He emphasized the need for government agencies to work with the private sector, as they can provide valuable information on the evolving threat landscape and assistance to operations. At TeamWorx Security, we've seen the power that a unified effort brings. We enable mission-critical partners to come together to facilitate information sharing and advance #CyberSecurity as threats proliferate. Productive evening with our #Labs2024 participants! Tonight we met virtually for the first time since our trip to Mainz to pick up our work on the policy recommendations for critical infrastructure. Specifically, our state legislators from Germany, Canada, and the United States discussed how threats to critical infrastructure, such as natural disasters, health crises, or cyber and physical attacks, can to be addressed at the subnational policy level. #policyrecommendations #bipartisan #criticalinfrastructure

Imagine a world where you can't trust the water coming out of your tap. Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, like our water systems, are on the rise. Recently, a water treatment facility in Arkansas City, Kansas, was targeted, highlighting the vulnerability we face. SOFTwarfare® and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warns of the increasing threat to our water systems, impacting public health and safety. State leaders must act to protect our infrastructure. Strong security measures and cybersecurity training are crucial to prevent future attacks. We must ensure the safety of our communities in the State of Kansas and across the Country. Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility. Let's unite to make a difference. I urge you to share this post, tagging organizations like CMMC 2.0 information 2.0, National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA), and State of Kansas. Together, let's raise awareness and demand action. Join us in addressing this critical issue. #cybersecurity #criticalinfrastructure #watersystems #CMMC #NDIA #StateofKansas Link: https://lnkd.in/g_-e-4f3

"How does Gigamon play a part in security infrastructure?" Here is a great answer! MELT is simply not enough In honor of Healthcare Security and Safety Week, we're spotlighting UHN! Running the largest hospital-based research program in Canada and conducting leading-edge research in several areas, the UHN needed increased network visibility to stop attacks before they caused damage. A presidential advisory report on improving the resilience of critical infrastructure sectors won the approval of the nation’s top cybersecurity experts Wednesday, particularly around better funding for the agencies that are supposed to help them protect against cyberattacks. The report from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, which laid out multiple recommendations for the White House to consider, was first approved in January and made public in February. While the report has four overarching recommendations, a large portion is dedicated to gaining a better understanding and prioritizing the increased complexity and interdependencies of critical infrastructure organizations https://lnkd.in/e9BMH3jF
