The earth sciences consulting sector is already reeling from an extremely tight labour market. The implications of this decision for engineering and environmental consultancies five to ten years down the road is frightening.
Fleming College has made unprecedented cuts to programming, allegedly in response to a significant reduction in international student visas. These cuts, in addition to those made in June last year, have particularly impacted the Frost Campus - the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences - which now no longer has an Environmental Technician program or a Geological Technician program, amongst many others that support environmental and natural resource industries (Fish and Wildlife, Conservation and Environmental Law Enforcement, GIS, Ecosystem Management… the full list of recent cancellations is in the news article below). Community colleges, such as Fleming, are founded on supporting the Ontario Labour Market, and initiatives such as the Critical Minerals Strategy, or the Housing Action Plan, will require geoscience and environmental professionals - professionals that Fleming college have provided for the last 50 years but will not, going forward. I would love to hear from program graduates on how their Frost programs impacted their lives and careers. If you want to share a story please send me a DM or post in the comments. https://lnkd.in/g4tHcCVt

VP Sales & Marketing | Fractional Chief Growth Officer | Storyteller | Writer | TEDx Speaker | Podcast Host | Branding, Marketing & Business Development | Focused on Mining
When Joanna Hodge, PhD, PGeo told me about another round of program cuts at Fleming College, I hoped she was joking. Unfortunately, she wasn't. This absence of skill-based education will negatively affect Canada's mining sector and critical minerals supply chain. The list of programs cancelled includes the following: - Business (Accounting, HR, Project and Supply Chain Management, Global Business Management) - Ecological Restoration - Ecosystem Management - Environmental Tech - Environmental Visual Communication (guts me to my core) - Fish & Wildlife Tech - GIS - Water Resources Management - HSE Compliance - Heavy Equipment Tech As an industry, we can't emphasize how much we need skill-based talent to build Canada's next phase of responsible resource development. Fleming College's decision is sad. #mining #education #postsecondary #skillbasedhiring

What could mentoring mean for you? Amy Padfield recently spoke to Countryside Jobs Service about the launch of our new mentoring platform that allows users to connect with other BES members and take part in our mentoring programme focussed on personal and professional development. Think this programme could be beneficial to you or someone you know? Check out the article to learn more! #mentoring #greenjobs #ecologyjobs
Have you ever been mentored in your current career? If not, do you think it would have made a difference? This #NationalMentoringMonth we look to the British Ecological Society who have a long history of providing mentoring opportunities in different forms. They tell us how they have learnt a great deal over the years in how to provide an offering for those either working within ecology, conservation and environmental roles, or those hoping to enter the sector. In this article Amy Padfield tells us about the launch of a brand new mentoring programme that is not subject specific to topics within ecology and the environment, but rather focuses on goals relating to personal and professional development for those both within and outside of academia. I recently led a workshop in Northern Tasmania for a group of environmental scientists. This session went beyond an initial introduction to strengths; we explored in depth how each strength could impact their work and team dynamics. We focused on the real applications of understanding each individual's strengths, liabilities, and vulnerabilities. This approach aims to improve their interactions with stakeholders and team collaboration. The discussion initiated in this workshop is designed to foster ongoing dialogue and have a sustained impact on their professional relationships and effectiveness. I love seeing the impact these days can have. NRM North #TeamBuilding #StrengthsWorkshop #EnvironmentalScience #LeadershipDevelopment #Tasmania

📚🌳 This Earth Day, reflect on Robert Swan’s words, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Each action and item you learn contributes to a sustainable tomorrow. The FE sector can reach millions of learners and prepare them for careers that may require environmental awareness. 🎓💡 The National Association for Environmental Education (NAEE) suggests a focus on the 4 C’s: 📖 Curriculum 👨🏫 Campus 🗣️ Community 👨🎓 Culture To discover more about the impact you can make by following the 4 C’s, explore our helpful article: (Link in the comments) #Sustainability #FurtherEducation #Apprenticeshiptips #ClimateChange #EducationSustainability #EducationStaffBank #ConnectingPeopleInEducation

🌿🌏 Celebrating World Mangrove Day: A Commitment to Education & Restoration 🌏🌿 Today, on World Mangrove Day, we acknowledge the immense value of mangrove ecosystems to our planet. Mangroves protect shorelines from erosion, support rich biodiversity, and serve as crucial carbon sinks in the fight against climate change. At the Living Oceans Foundation, we are deeply committed to the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests. Through our Jamaica Awareness of Mangroves in Nature (J.A.M.I.N.) and Bahamas Awareness of Mangroves (B.A.M.) programs, we educate students and inspire future environmental leaders to understand and protect these vital ecosystems. Join us in celebrating World Mangrove Day by learning more about mangrove forests and how we are working to conserve them. Together, we can make a difference for a sustainable future. #WorldMangroveDay #MangroveConservation #LivingOceansFoundation #Sustainability #EcosystemRestoration #EnvironmentalEducation
