It’s been almost two months since Rex collapsed into administration and scrapped its domestic jet services, and the latest BITRE data shows that airfares – both sale prices and standard economy seats – have seen a sharp increase. With the Qantas-Virgin duopoly once again ruling Australia’s skies, how much of this increase can be attributed to loss of competition versus normal seasonal factors? Adam and Jake look at the figures and what the experts are saying. Plus, Embraer says it could have more than 200 E-Jets in Australia by the end of this decade – could this be the key to a regional jet renaissance? https://bit.ly/4d9wxMH

How do you manage significant background noise during a live audience session? This week I had the privilege of chairing a panel discussion on behalf of Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd at the 2024 Farnborough Air Show. By the time we kicked off there was a decent sized audience clustered around the stand, unsurprisingly, given #netzero is a topic uppermost in the minds of the aviation community and the #airlander aircraft is attracting significant attention. Unfortunately, a couple of minutes in, the event was disrupted by the roaring of jet engines as an air display got underway with a flight path close to the pavilion. At times it soundly like the aircraft were actually overhead! It’s hardly a secret that exhibition halls pose acoustic challenges but this took things to a different level. Here’s some tips on how as a presenter or panel leader you might deal with this type of situation: 1. Don’t panic! Rabbit caught in headlights is rarely a good look. Stay calm and confident, raise your voice but resist the temptation to shout 2. Make a judgement about when to pause and when to re-commence. Take a cue from your audience and observe if they are straining to hear 3. Use humour where appropriate. A well-timed joke or comment acknowledging the cause of the disruption (in this case a dig at Ryanair’s expense) will keep listeners onside 4. Maintain eye contact with your audience around the stand. If you come across as dispirited they will drift away 5. Finally, when the disruption is over, make sure you thank them for sticking around. They will appreciate it. In conclusion I should say that it helps to be alongside great panellists like George Land David Holden, FRAeS and Luis Enrique de la Iglesia y Gotarredona "Quique" and to be on such a visually impactful and well-organised stand Hannah Cunningham thanks to you all #fia2024 #airline
