Organized retail crime (ORC) is a serious and growing issue, costing American retailers over $69 billion annually and resulting in job losses from store closures and reduced hours. These crimes involve sophisticated operations by criminal organizations, not just isolated shoplifting incidents. The INFORM Consumers Act, signed into law in 2022, aids law enforcement in tracking and prosecuting these enterprises, reducing the sale of stolen and counterfeit goods on third-party marketplaces. It also helps prevent brazen thefts, ensuring the safety of retail employees and communities. The INFORM Consumers Act is a significant win for retailers, retail workers, consumers, and law enforcement. How do you #protect your assets today? More troubling consequences of the "defund and defame the police" movement, and the soft-on-crime policies that resulted! Nationwide, it is estimated that shoplifting is up 10% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2019. In one nationwide survey, 78% of consumers said they fear for their safety and security while shopping at stores. Brazen shoplifting has forced hundreds of California stores to close. It should be noted that under California law, stealing goods valued at up to $950 is a misdemeanor. And Capital One estimates that retail theft losses will rise from $121.6 billion in 2023 to more than $150 billion by 2026. Stores catch shoplifters just 2% of the time and police arrest shoplifters just once out of every 100 incidents. https://lnkd.in/eCAP8Ab2 #BehindBadge

California Stores Introduce Clever Anti-Shoplifting Tactic Amid rising shoplifting rates & laws classifying theft under $950 as a misdemeanor, some California retailers are pricing all items at $951. Legitimate buyers receive a discount at checkout, bringing prices back to normal. This tactic aims to deter shoplifters, who would face charges based on the inflated price. Retailers hope to combat theft while navigating current legislation challenges. The method has sparked both praise & debate online as businesses tackle organized retail crime. #retailers #shoplifters #theft #crime

❗Glasgow launches dedicated team to tackle rising retail theft Just last year, a dedicated shoplifting team was launched in Glasgow with the aim of strengthening action against rising retail crime in the city. By working closely with retailers, 49 people were arrested in connection with 61 thefts across Glasgow between December 1, 2024, and January 8, 2025. These are the kinds of results we want to see! Bridging the gap between law enforcement, including dedicated shoplifting teams, and retailers is at the heart of our fight against retail crime. #RetailCrime #Shoplifting #Glasgow
