👩🚀 From punching above its weight to an inflection point, the UK space sector has developed (extremely) fast in one year! 🛰In the past few weeks, I’ve attended several events that have affirmed this assertion. These included a space business roundtable organized by SSPI UK, meetings with the Positioning, Navigation, and (don’t forget!) Timing community, an event with the National Spectrum Centre at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and finally, a space security symposium hosted by the Swiss Embassy. 🚀 It all comes together with the announcement by the UK Government of a new Regulatory Innovation Office (RIO), which will promote regulatory agility driving more competition, investment, and market access. As we wait all these dialogues to unfold, there is plenty to go around to ensure resilience for the industry and prevent costs from skyrocketing 🤣 Jokes aside, we need to mitigate the risk from debris by optimizing space assets. Attention must be given to guarantee delivery along the supply chain. As well as adopt a secure by design capability to current and future space assets. 💡 These are but a few thoughts we need to develop to guarantee return from all the amazing activity in the sector. 📸 Thanks to Jaynesh Patel for registering the moment. #satellite #space #capabiltities #resilience

📣“New Space Threats to Europe - Are we well prepared?” That’s the title of the panel hosted by the Head of BDLI’s Space Strategy Committee, Eva-Maria Aicher, on the closing day of the Munich New Space Summit. ❗The key take-aways: 🔷The threats to space assets on ground or in space do not only stem from foreign adversaries, but also from internal challenges: 🔸Lack of political support, ambitions and strategies 🔸Bureaucratical hurdles and overregulation 🔸Overly sophisticed customer requirements or specifications of the manufacturers themselves 🔸Lack of a streamlined common space (security) strategy in Germany and Europe ➡️ To overcome these challenges a change in mindset is needed, especially with regard to German "Fehlerkultur". ➡️ Thus the importance of space must not be communicated to decision-makers only but also to the general public. It was such a pleasure and honor to co-chair the first-ever U.S.-Italy space dialogue with LTG Federici. Our two countries are such close allies and partners on so many issues. I am delighted that President Biden and Prime Minister Meloni came together last July in Washington to commit to strengthening our space cooperation through the creation of this dialogue. Italy is an important partner in space for the United States, both through its national space agency and as a member of the European Space Agency - ESA (ESA). Italy plays an instrumental part in the Artemis program, which will return humans to the Moon and put them on Mars. Italy’s contribution of the pressurized lunar habitation module will be critical to the success of the Artemis missions, as this will be the first permanent outpost on the Moon. As founding signatories of the Artemis Accords, Italy and the United States commit to the exploration of space for peaceful purposes, transparency, sharing scientific data, registering space objects, providing emergency assistance, and other commitments that help ensure that space exploration is a cooperative endeavor that benefits all humanity.

🚀Strengthening US-Italy Strategic #Space Partnership: forging the future🚀 From October 10-14, 2024, the first #US-#Italy Space Dialogue set a structured course for future collaboration in crucial areas such as #Security, #SpaceExploration, #commercial #innovation, and #sustainability. This wasn't just a diplomatic event—it is a strategic framework designed to unite both nations in addressing global space challenges with a shared #vision. Key political figures such as Vice Min. Edmondo Cirielli Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale and Vice Min. Valentino Valentini #MIMIT authoritatively opened the discussion, while Chirag Parikh and Rahima Kandahari from the US delegation led the talks alongside prominent industry and government representatives. 👾 One core theme? The growing significance of #SpaceSecurity, especially in light of emerging threats like anti-satellite weapons and counter-surveillance activities. We are ready to maintain technological leadership and resilience in the face of evolving challenges. Space is no longer about competition; it's about collective resilience, protecting critical infrastructure, and preventing conflict. 👾 🛰 I had the honor of participating as a speaker on the topic of #Resilience of Space Infrastructures, emphasizing the need for #common minimum #standards to protect against emerging #threats. 🛰 🌍 Additionally, the emphasis on Earth Observation (#EO) underscores the strategic importance of #satellite #data in understanding climate change and managing natural resources. Italy, with its long-standing expertise in this field, is a critical partner for the US, offering unique capabilities that make a tangible difference in protecting our planet.🌍 A Joint Statement was agreed upon, solidifying this strategic alliance. 🔗 Read more here https://lnkd.in/epS8SbHY This dialogue not only complements Italy's role within the #EUSpace Programme—where capability development can sometimes be subject to lengthy negotiations—but also strengthens its position as a strategic partner for the US in shaping a shared future in space. #USItalySpacePartnership #NewSpaceEconomy #GlobalLeadership

As global commercial space development accelerates, more non-state actors are entering the space domain. The traditional outer space treaties and governance frameworks need innovation and reform while preserving their foundations. Space safety governance faces many challenges, but it remains a key common topic of international concern. Through dialogue, cooperation, and joint actions, every player can seize opportunities in this competitive landscape with acceptable levels of safety. The panel I Chaired together with Andrea Harrington brought together experts from the U.S., France, New Zealand, Finland, Canada, Japan, India and China, offering a diverse range of perspectives. It was a prime example of diverse and inclusive dialogue at the 14th International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety Conference. Thank you, my colleague panelists! Thank you for your cooperation, efforts, and insights, which made our panel discussion both successful and engaging. The 21st-century "spacescape" is rapidly evolving, with commercial actors, increasing activity and dual-use technologies presenting new challenges for space governance. While international space law was originally focused on states, the rise of non-state actors means the existing framework remains vital but must adapt. In a new Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) article, Dr. Cassandra Steer, Chair of Australian Centre for Space Governance, introduces the concept of "space citizenship", an expansion of global and planetary citizenship. Since we all rely on space-based services, we all have a stake in its governance. Space citizenship calls for multi-stakeholder, inclusive and intergenerational solutions to ensure space remains safe, secure, sustainable and accessible. Space governance faces complex problems related to safety, security and sustainability. In this paper, Dr. Cassandra Steer argues that a broader multi-generational “space citizen” framework should be taken into account to help ensure that the impacts of human activity in space are minimal, and that space remains accessible.
