I have dedicated decades to advocating for Special Education, starting since my eldest daughter was born in 1984. Over the years, I have honed my negotiation skills with school districts to secure the necessary accommodations and special education services for children. Additionally, I bring a wealth of experience in negotiating and crafting Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) with school districts. #SpecialEducation #Advocacy #IEPs

Deputy Chief, Academic Programs | Special Education, Multilingual Education, KIPP Forward (College Access Programming)
🌍 Embracing Multilingual Education: A Vision for Inclusivity and Empowerment 🌍 Loving this post from TNTP ! In today's interconnected world, multilingual education is not just an asset—it's a necessity. As we strive to prepare students for global citizenship, it's crucial to start vision-development with those who often find themselves marginalized. (TNTP video slide 1 below) Why Focus on Marginalized Students? Equity and Access: Ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to quality education is fundamental. Multilingual education can bridge gaps and provide equitable opportunities for all. Cultural Empowerment: Recognizing and valuing the languages and cultures of marginalized communities fosters a sense of belonging and pride among students. Enhanced Cognitive Skills: Research shows that multilingualism boosts cognitive abilities, creativity, and problem-solving skills—benefits that should be accessible to all students. Economic Opportunities: Proficiency in multiple languages opens doors to diverse career opportunities, preparing students for the global job market. A Vision for the Future: Inclusive Curriculum: Develop and implement a curriculum that reflects the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of all students. Community Engagement: Partner with communities to create educational programs that support and celebrate multilingualism. Teacher Training: Invest in professional development for educators to effectively teach and support multilingual learners. Policy Advocacy: Advocate for policies that promote and sustain multilingual education initiatives, ensuring they are a permanent fixture in our education systems. We (educators) can create an educational environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. By starting with the needs of marginalized students in our vision setting, we lay the foundation for a more inclusive and empowered future.🌟 #MultilingualEducation #Inclusion #EquityInEducation #GlobalCitizenship #EducationalLeadership TNTP
We wanted to learn from school systems that made intentional investments specifically targeting MLs, and so to examine their strategies we engaged leaders in six districts: Surry County Schools and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina; Gadsden in New Mexico; Fresno, California; Tulsa Public Schools in Oklahoma; and Chicago Public Schools in Illinois. Here's what they taught us: https://ow.ly/UOxh50QKRYJ #MLAdvocacy #MultilingualLearners #AllMeansAll #TNTP

In our team meeting today, we explored the reasons why children remaining in or being reintegrated back into mainstream education is so important. We know that children are too often impacted by the lack of a national approach to alternative provisions and that the longer they are out of education the harder it can be for them to return to an educational environment. It’s really important that teams working with children have a clear picture of their local arrangements and know how to advocate and support those who are at risk of losing their mainstream placement. #education #childfirst #advocacy #buckinghamshire #youthjustice

Collaboration, education, advocacy, vision, and healing are key components in the fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Collaborating with various stakeholders is crucial for successful anti-trafficking efforts. Providing education opportunities for students and community members to engage in this movement is vital. Advocacy, law, and public policy play significant roles in driving social change. Envisioning a world without human trafficking is the ultimate goal. Offering victims hope and healing instead of scorn and punishment is essential in this fight. Together, let's work towards a future free from human trafficking and modern-day slavery. #Collaboration #Education #Advocacy #Vision #Healing
