BATNA - Best Alternative To Negotiated Agreement.
While prevalent in buyers circles, it's not just a concept that people in charge of buying tools should be familiar with.
Your BATNA is your fallback plan, your Plan B, and it's crucial as you work with others on strategy.
Some benefits of having a BATNA:
- Clarity of Thought: It will force you to think critically about your options and priorities.
- Confidence: Knowing you have a viable alternative boosts your confidence and helps you negotiate more assertively.
- Better Decision Making: When faced with a proposal, comparing it to your BATNA helps you decide whether to accept, reject, or continue negotiating.
And, if you're wondering, "How do I even get to a BATNA?!" Some examples might be:
- Brainstorming Session: If you can't agree on a project direction, your BATNA could be to present your ideas to a different team or pursue them independently.
- Collaborative Writing: If you and your counterpart clash on the Go-To-Market direction, your BATNA might be to write your version separately and seek sponsorship in the org elsewhere.
- Strategy Meeting: If you can't convince your colleagues of your marketing strategy, your BATNA could be to pilot your approach on a smaller scale to gather data supporting your ideas.
Remember, a well-defined BATNA isn't about being adversarial or negative. It's about being prepared and strategic, ensuring you and the team can always make the best decision to gain the most optimal outcomes.
