🛫 Hot take: with the potential exception of a handful of top-performing and highly innovative players, commercial aerospace is no longer an industry for small suppliers. 🚀 Thanks to Aviation Week Network (Joseph Anselmo, Michael Bruno) for publishing my perspective on how we need to raise the bar for the next-gen supply chain in aerospace and its implications for small suppliers. Do you agree? 📩 PS: Feel free to DM if you would like a PDF of the article - though I trust all my A&D contacts have an Aviation Week account already #aerospace #supplychain #smallbusiness (🙏 John Stoll)

This is a very interesting piece by Matteo Peraldo on the evolving aerospace supply chain and the step change we may see with the next generation of single-aisle aircraft. A few thoughts: - I agree that the ‘table stakes’ will continue to increase for aerospace manufacturers. The required technology stack will continue to get bigger with robust cybersecurity, model-based engineering and digital supply chain tools. Software is (still) eating the world. - Tight labor markets in the western world are a secular trend. Legacy programs and production systems created a push for ‘low-cost country’ manufacturing as a means to reduce cost. The next generation of aircraft and production systems will prioritize automation and reducing total labor content. This will be a shift to capital over labor and businesses with more operating leverage requiring more scale. - Additive is a game-changing technology for certain types of components, creating an entirely new design space. However, traditional manufacturing processes will still be critical for a number of reasons, including mechanical properties, throughput and cost. - I agree that we are moving to a supply chain that is more consolidated, composed of suppliers with more diversified portfolios and stronger balance sheets. It takes so many technologies to build a modern aircraft though, and there will always be corners of the market where small suppliers emerge because of some unique IP or other differentiating factor.
