The African Union's efforts through the CAADP Strategy and Action Plan are a pivotal step in reshaping the future of Africa's agrifood systems. The commitment to boosting food production and expanding value addition within a 10-year framework holds immense potential for long-term sustainability and self-reliance. As highlighted during the recent summit in Kampala, the adoption of the 2026-2035 CAADP Strategy and the Kampala Declaration serves as a bold and transformative vision for Africa’s agricultural future. Africa has the natural resources, the potential, and the entrepreneurial spirit to feed itself. However, the journey towards achieving this goal demands a multi-faceted approach. It requires a holistic integration of innovation, sustainable practices, robust infrastructure, market access, and most importantly, empowering local communities, especially smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of the continent’s agricultural sector. This transformative agenda will necessitate cross-sector collaboration between governments, the private sector, and international partners, as well as a strong commitment to investing in youth, women, and technology in agriculture. The Kampala Declaration's emphasis on sustainable growth aligns well with the pressing need to address climate change, enhance food security, and ensure equitable access to nutritious food across the continent. Africa's path to self-sufficiency in food production is not just about increasing yield—it’s about reimagining systems that are resilient, inclusive, and capable of withstanding global challenges. The conversations sparked by the CAADP strategy are essential to ensure that the continent’s agrifood systems not only feed its people but also contribute to global sustainability goals. As we look ahead, let us continue to support initiatives like the CAADP Strategy, and focus on creating environments where Africa's agrifood systems can thrive, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for generations to come. #Agriculture #FoodSystems #Sustainability #AfricaRising #CAADP #KampalaDeclaration #AgrifoodTransformation #SelfSufficiency

This week, African Heads of State, the African Union, and key stakeholders in the agricultural sector came together in Kampala, Uganda, to launch a transformative 10-year strategy to secure food and nutrition security across the continent. The Kampala Declaration, unveiled during an AU summit, lays out ambitious goals to shape sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agrifood systems by 2035. The strategy prioritizes: 🌾 Boosting agricultural output by 45% 📉 Reducing post-harvest losses by 50% 🌍 Tripling intra-African trade in agrifood products 🏭 Increasing locally processed food to 35% of agrifood GDP 🌱 Expanding sustainable land management to cover 30% of the continent ⚖️ Narrowing the yield gap between male and female farmers by 50% These commitments align with Africa's bold ambitions under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat (AfCFTA) and build on lessons from the 2014 Malabo Declaration while addressing challenges like climate change, population growth, and food system resilience. 🤝 African nations will undergo biennial reviews to monitor progress, with public-private partnerships and regional cooperation central to achieving these goals. While there are challenges ahead, the vision for a sustainable agricultural future inspires optimism. Learn more by visiting this article: https://lnkd.in/dVbH9ahV Neema K. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is more than just an agreement- it’s a bold step toward transforming Africa into a global economic powerhouse. With intra-African trade opportunities, especially in agriculture, we have the chance to tackle #foodsecurity, diversify economies, and create resilient supply chains. As highlighted by UNECA, increased regional trade can address challenges like malnutrition, food price inflation, and #climatechange impacts. 🌱 But for this transformation to succeed, public-private partnerships are key. As Dr. Jacqueline Mkindi, CEO of Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), emphasizes: “Our enterprises need mechanisms and access to the right information to fully tap into these opportunities. Success lies in collaboration- private sector and governments working together.” 💡 The Opportunity: • #AfCFTA could enable African countries to sustainably feed themselves amid global uncertainties. • The horticulture sector alone has the potential to generate up to $3 billion annually through improved market access and technologies. 📢 It’s time for leaders, innovators, and changemakers to join forces and unlock Africa’s potential as a unified trading bloc. Together, we can build an Africa that thrives. The lifespan of the #Malabo_Declaration is retiring, and the stakeholders are busy crafting a comprehensive successor agenda guided by the best evidence to shape the strategic direction to drive agri-food systems transformation globally for the next 10 years. CISANET Malawi commits to continue providing leadership among the non-state actors in agriculture policy analysis and advocacy. Day one(1) of two (2) of the Partners for Change (P4C) conference themed “Transformation to a Food Secure, Resilient and Sustainable Future,” focused on fostering south-south dialogue across countries and continents; and also linking global agendas on agricultural and food system with implementation on the ground. “Data and reporting to enhance evidence-based policy accountability” is one of the factors for better implementation of continental/regional agenda at the national level, suggests CISANET’s Acting National Director, Elizabeth Namaona. Notably, today is the final day of the P4C conference and she anticipates contributing to an independent Memorandum to the Post Malabo consultation process using the network’s lived experiences in the policy landscape over the years. Again, later in the day, she is expected to host a world café table dubbed “Regulations and Compliance within Supply Chains.” This session examines market interventions and policy actions needed for fostering inclusive and sustainable agricultural value chain development in the soya value chain in Benin, the cocoa in Ghana; and the coffee and tea in Ethiopia. Her key question is to explore what policy development or changes are needed to support regulations and compliance within these supply chains. #P4C MwAPATA Institute CSONA Malawi Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH AUDA NEPAD African Union AKADEMIYA2063

Did you know that Africa has been recognized as the next frontier for food production? "With over 60% of the world's arable land, Africa has no business importing food" Financial Times Africa can be a net exporter of food if it improves its weak agricultural practices, improve infrastructure and access to technology. But people have to make this happen through innovative entrepreneurship. No one is coming to solve the problems for us, we have to work out the solutions and take bold initiatives. Inspired to know that there are entrepreneurs thinking and executing. I spent time with some of them in the Agriculture Workstream during the Circular Economy Strategy Week in March. Though from different backgrounds, we were all facing similar challenges in the agribusiness sector. No wonder, it wasn't difficult to find a common ground on how-to solve food loss challenge in Nigeria. Thanks to all team members and facilitators specially Freek van Eijk who shared learnings from the Holland Circular Hotspot, Mercy Mayaki, GODWIN EHIABHI, Olaoluwa Bamigboye and organizers Dr. Natalie Beinisch, Consulate General of The Netherlands for making this happen! #throwbackthursday to #CEStrategyweek. #agribusiness #venturebuillding #womeninbusiness #entrepreneurmindset #circulareconomy Scientia Partners Circular Business Platform Dr. Helen Emore, PhD, mnimn

After a special convening meeting with states men of different Africa's countries in Kampala, Uganda this past week, The African Union has launched the 3rd 10 year #CAADP #Strategy and #Action #Plan: 2026 – 2035… Resilient Agrifood Systems in Africa. This plan can greatly influence African economies by enhancing sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. If well implemented, its focus areas on sustainable production, agro-industrialization, trade, equity, and investment could foster structural transformation, employment generation, food security, and income generation. Through regional integration through an action on African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, tackling the issue of malnutrition as well as the marginalization of some groups in the society this way the strategy seeks to eliminate poverty hence bringing about sustainable socio-economic development. Its comprehensive approach guarantees that agriculture is entrenched as a development pillar of economy, environment, and society to foster change of the continental agrifood systems for prosperity. But still #Africa still grapples with; poor investment in agriculture, poor policy enforcement and implementation, and climate change to mention but a few, inadequate resource access by women and the youths. Other challenges are infrastructure, market constraints, and weak cooperation among regions, which must be overcome to deliver on its change mission. download https://lnkd.in/eA6xhE2M #Agenda2063 FAO Delegation of The European Union to Kenya Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) African Union Development Agency-NEPAD African Development Bank Group

Ways that free trade can boost sustainable agriculture in Africa Did you know that Africa has the potential to become the world’s powerhouse in the coming years? The continent is undergoing unprecedented changes, with the implementation of the African Continent Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to eliminate trade barriers and boost intra-African trade, projected to represent a single market of 1.7 billion people and $6.7 trillion in consumer and business spending for the region by 2030. AfCFTA is widely seen as a key step in implementing the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063, which aspires to create a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. This includes specific goals such as creating a high standard of living for all citizens, a healthy and well-nourished populace, and modern agriculture for increased productivity and production.
